Hypnosis is really an interesting topic. It seems as though we're only just beginning to realise the power of hypnosis, yet it's been around for a long time. What follows is a quick snapshot of hypnosis down the years, and you might be a little surprised with some of its applications. In 1841 James Braid created the name Hypnosis, before that it was known as Mesmerism. Braid had decided to update the name as he now had a better understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. Users of Mesmerism had thought that it was due to some unique knowledge or power they practised, which caused people to enter the unique state. Braid made the discovery that the Mesmerist didn't hold any special power, but instead the mesmerism resulted through what was going on in the subject's mind. Around the early 1900's when professor Emile Coue promoted the usefulness of hypnosis by way of auto-suggestion. This was the power to give hypnotic suggestions to one's self, adding credence to the developments James Braid had made previously, hypnosis was a self induced state of mind. His system was heavily influenced by Braids findings before him. The model of hypnosis being more of a self controlled state, in place of one reliant on the all powerful hypnotist was now becoming popular. This opened the doors for people to develop auto-suggestion to send their minds suggestions for change. Dr Sigmond Freud began working with hypnosis as part of his theory of psychoanalysis coming to the end of the 1800's, however didn't see the benefits of it. He was reported saying later in his life, if only he learned the correct way to use hypnosis at the beginning of his psychoanalysis career, as he did coming to the end of his career, he would have never stopped using it. After that, (1901-1980) Doctor Milton Erickson gave birth to a different way of doing therapy which gave birth to NLP and influenced many of today's hypnotists - the style of Indirect Hypnosis. This permissive style of hypnosis was in stark contrast to previous types of hypnosis; it was most effective for hypnotising clients who didn't like the authoritative approach. A more traditional approach to hypnosis was being taught to doctors and dentists during the same time period by Dave Elman. This type of therapy was cutting edge, and very efficient for anaesthesia and hypno-analysis. His rapid hypnotic methods are currently used by practitioners today. The late great Ormond McGill, was referred to as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis” and was also well published for his therapeutic work, in which he was excellent. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. The Dean died in 2005. A major contributor to therapy and analysis used today, Gil Boyne died in 2010. Gill was known for his amazing insights around the study of hypno-analysis, which has improved the methods developed by Stage hypnotist Dave Elman a great deal. The collections known as 'Transforming Therapies' was a collection of his findings in hypnosis. Presently therapists have greater access to information at the touch of a button than the hypnotists of old could even imagine. As research progresses more and more serious conditions have been helped through analytical therapy, thanks in no small part to the progress made by internet forums. Also hypnotherapy become more standardised in treating habits along the lines of weight control and giving up smoking and with fears and phobias.
