With all of the available window treatments available these days –from Honeycomb/Cellular Shades to draperies to Roman Shades, and beyond — trying to prioritize a room’s decorating needs can be more than a little overwhelming. As with any endeavor with a multitude of options, it sometimes helps to write down various combinations, and then switch elements from this or that idea to see if something immediately strikes your fancy as just the right solution for that special room in your home. Consider the following ideas to mix and match as you will: Rather than get too caught up in various specialty fabrics – which, for certain uses, can be right on the money – start out by sticking with the basics: Cotton, silk, Faux Silk, nylon, lace or another kind of sheer fabric. Try experimenting with placing various kinds of curtains over a blind. This can sometimes be tried out in a store where there are displays of blinds and bins of loose fabric swatches. See about doubling up some choices by hanging a curtain on a double rod beneath a draw drape made out of chintz, linen or velvet. Hanging draperies alone on a decorative pole can make a stronger statement than can several layers’ worth of fabric. Use swags or jabots to create a header for certain decorative curtains. You can attempt the same treatment if the only thing covering a window is a blind. A beautifully conceived swag can add the right finishing touch to even the plainest of blinds. This can work especially well when the swag is paired with a couple of short jabots that hang from either end of the blind. Many window treatments can benefit from the addition of a cornice or valance, which adds more of a formal, finished look to the window. Some valances can be made of wood to achieve a boxier, more dimensional look; the wooden frame is then covered with the valance fabric of your choice. Still stumped?
