Odds are these days you won't find blacksmiths listed in your local phone book. There are, however, many trained professionals who apply their trade as technicians in numerous industries. Since the applications are more specific than they once were, many of these tradesmen practice a certain type of bonding. Today we are going to talk about micro welding.
What is it?
As the name implies, micro welding involves extremely small welds of less than 100 micrometers wide that are used to join two metals. (That's smaller than the diameter of the average human hair!) Since precise placement of connective materials is required, the process is typically completed under a microscope. Considered one of the most complicated, specialized jobs in the profession, only experienced technicians or machines can do it.
Used to join flat plates of various metals, resistance micro welding is the simplest, most common technique. To perform it, the two plates are overlapped a bit and electrodes are applied to each side. When a small electrical current is run through them, the ends of the metals melt and form a tiny joint when cooled. The resistance method is used when the seam where the pieces meet must be completely flat, such as with medical devices or implants.
When irregular shapes and dissimilar materials must be joined, the flash method is most commonly used. To create a tiny butt joint, the welder clamps together the ends of each piece together and runs an electrical current through them. Often used to in jewelry making, it is perhaps the most versatile method a skilled technician can use.
No matter what the shape, a filler material can be used to join two pieces of metal with a method known as arc welding. Once again, electrodes are used to melt the materials until they mix and form a new metal that hardens solid when it cools. Most commonly used to make repairs to equipment or tools, this technique can save companies on parts and replacements.
