If you’ve ever watched a relative or family friend suffer from dementia, you know what a frightening and debilitating illness it can be. Nobody wants to put their loved ones through the tragedy of watching their personality, mind, and memory decay. And although there may not currently be a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to mitigate the symptoms. A recent study has shown that the simple action of drinking mineral water daily can be effective in significantly slowing the rate of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s sufferers. During a 13 week trial, participants drank 1 litre of mineral water each day. Both before and after the test, cognitive function was tested using a recognised, professional test called the ADAS-Cog, which stands for “Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive.” The 11-part test is designed to examine memory and brain ability. The results? They were incredibly promising. The majority of participants experienced no further cognitive decline, and several actually experienced significant improvement. Some still experienced decline, but they were the minority. There is a very specific, scientific reason for this (and science is non-negotiable when you’re dealing with anything medical; never fall for remedies that claim to have “magic” results but no research to back it up!). It lies in the body’s levels of two minerals: aluminium and silicon. Some people associate “aluminium” with everyday products like aluminium foil, but it’s actually a neurotoxin that has been linked for years to dementia. In minuscule levels the effects are not noticeable, but in many Alzheimer’s sufferers, it’s present in more toxic amounts. The way mineral water helps counteract symptoms is through silicon, a chemical element that actually helps to flush aluminium from the bloodstream, thus preventing the toxin from causing further damage to the brain. This also helps to explain why participants experienced varied results, as those with higher levels of aluminium will naturally notice more marked of a difference than those with negligible amounts. Keep in mind that not all mineral water is created equal: you’ll have to check the ingredients list to determine whether your chosen brand has enough silicon to truly be effective. The water used in the tests contained 35mg per litre. Commercially available mineral waters won’t always have numbers that high, but you should definitely aim for over 20mg per litre to achieve best results. alkalife contains 26.4mg per litre and has other great health benefits as well, making it the perfect choice to not only hydrate but help maintain long term wellbeing. Hopefully upcoming years will see greater and greater strides toward a cure, but for now we should focus on fighting Alzheimer’s in any way we can.
