There comes a time in everyone’s life where we need to take medication. Sometimes it is for a permanent condition; sometimes it is to help give us a boost to overcome an illness. Regardless, most people have, at one point used a prescription medication. Most are relatively harmless, but some can end up causing more damage than they prevent. Instead of resorting to medication, try fighting off infections with these four naturally anti-microbial foods. Garlic – Garlic has long been touted as a means of fighting infection. It helps to fight against yeast infections, fungus, parasites, and some bacterial infections. In order to get the biggest benefit, you should eat the garlic raw. Since that is just gross, most people find mixing it into something helps them get it down quickly. Chop up some garlic and drop it into a glass of orange juice. Quickly drink the whole thing before the garlic overpowers the juice. Coconut Oil – Many studies are coming up with how beneficial coconut oil is for you. Not only can it help with things like hair and skin health, but it can also help fight off infection. The fatty acids in the coconut make this oil the perfect antibacterial agent. Try to incorporate it into every day cooking to prevent infections before they happen. Lemons – Lemons aren’t just for sprucing up your water, adding a kick to your fish, or watching babies pucker at their sourness. The lemon contains coumarin and tetrazine. These two compounds are effective in fighting numerous different pathogens. Since lemons are so versatile, there is a way that you could use one every single day (even if it’s just adding a slice of lemon to your water at dinner). Honey – Honey has a long history of being used for medicinal purposes. In fact, in ancient times it was applied directly to wounds as a means of fighting infection and slowing bleeding. Now we have better ointments, but honey has not lost its benefits. The problem, however, is that pasteurized honey is basically honey flavored sugar. Stick with raw and unprocessed for maximum benefit. This list could continue on. There are more foods that have antibiotic properties (like horseradish, cabbage, and pineapple). But the bottom line is that if you have a healthy diet, that incorporates a lot of whole foods, you will be less likely to get sick. If you do feel an illness coming on, ramp up the use of anti-microbial foods before you head to the doctor and get a prescription for one of the dangerous drugs out there.
