It appears an underwater volcano has begun to erupt off the southwest coast of the Spanish island of El Hierro, local media reported on Wednesday. El Hierro, the most westerly parts of the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa, has experienced an increase in seismic activity in recent days with 94 earth tremors in the early hours of Tuesday. The tremors were between 2.6 and 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale. Seven of them were felt by the population of the island, which is home to around 10,000 people. Wednesday morning saw another 40 tremors take place. A helicopter belonging to emergency services has reported bubbles on the surface of the sea and the emergence of a white stain, 180 meters off the coast in an area known as the Mar de las Calmas (sea of calms). Recent tremors, which took place at a depth of 20 km, have been said to originate from the same spot. Scientists are currently analyzing the images in an attempt to determine the origin of the bubbles and the stain, which could well be produced as a result of sulphur expelled from an underwater vent. This new seismic activity follows events in mid-2011 when El Hierro was affected by a series of quakes, culminating in the eruption of an underground volcano to the south of the small fishing village of La Restinga.
