The battery is an essential component of your car. Without a properly functioning battery, a car can't even start, let alone run well. For this reason it is required that you be careful and well informed when you are purchasing a new car battery. There are five important factors you must keep in mind while shopping for a new battery: size, brand, reserve capacity, age, and cold-cranking amps. Understanding what each of these factors is and how to compare them across manufacturers will ensure that you choose the battery that is right for you. This short guide will give you an overview of car batteries and equip you with the information you need to make a confident decision. The size of the battery is an essential consideration. If the battery is too large or small for your vehicle's battery tray, then it simply will not function. Manufacturers refer to the size of their batteries with a 'group size' number. Different auto manufacturers will have battery trays of varying group size, so be sure to know this number. Keep in mind that an improperly sized battery can damage your vehicle. The brand refers to the trademark given to a particular battery. Your vehicle's owner's manual will likely specify a particular battery brand. It is a good idea to obey this guideline, but you may not want to pay the money for a more expensive brand. If this is the case, refer to the battery specification requirement which should also appear in your owner's manual. Don't be tempted to shop around exclusively by price: cheap brands can be loaded with defects which can harm you or your battery operated toy cars . Reserve capacity (RC) rating refers to the amount of minutes the battery can continuously supply minimum voltage needed to run a car should the car's alternator or fan belt fail. A high reserve capacity allows your vehicle's electrical systems to operate exclusively on battery power for an hour or longer. A battery's RC rating is usually not printed on its label, so you should inspect the product literature or ask a store assistant to find its true RC rating. Your vehicle is designed to operate with a specific reserve capacity. Consult your owner's manual for this information. A battery's age will give you a good sense of its remaining lifespan. A battery newer than six months is considered 'fresh.' Examine the battery for its manufacturing code: the first character will be a letter denoting the month and the second will be a number specifying the year. Try to buy the newest battery with the specifications you are looking for. Cold-cranking amps measure the battery's ability to start your car even in extremely cold weather. Temperature affects the chemical reactions which fuel a battery, and cold temperatures hinder these processes. A higher CCA means that a battery will have fewer problems in low temperatures. This should only be a major concern if you live in a cold climate battery operated ride ons car.
