Complied by Leah Linhares; Photography: Leslie Verdet; courtesy v2com The maxim ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’ translates with aplomb at the Jacou city hall cum wedding room by NBJ Architects… Challenged to rethink the dual use of the existing building, NBJ Architects have subtly yet spectacularly amalgamated the activities of the town’s City Hall and Wedding Hall into one edifice. Located in the centre of Jacou, France, the idea behind this exceptional design was to integrate two different key functions of the city. The architects, in order to establish a strong link between the City Hall and the Wedding Hall, brought into play a consistency of materiality, striking a harmonious balance between heritage and contemporaneity. A strong interiority contrasts with the outside. It offers a warm, enveloping and remarkable atmosphere up to the solemnity of the events it hosts, while the ground and the façade of the building create an overall balance. The purity of white combines with the neutrality of earth colours in the stone edifice, complemented by the undulations in the ceiling to chisel a calm ambience. The edifice appears chic from the outside too with its exposed stone and white crown; whilst the language continues to regale within with its minimalist set up. The ceiling contributes as the single most significant architectural element as it bears the fully integrated technical stakes – lights, networks, etc., as well as aesthetic dynamics of extending the interiors beyond its confines to the outdoors. Thus, a new program is associated with generous public space of quality, accessible to everyone. The dual hall results in a successful conversion within the existing urban fabric, and offers to the city of Jacou a contemporary setting dedicated to wedding ceremonies.
