Union carpenters and union installation companies often get a bad rap, usually by uninformed people who simply repeat the stale rhetoric heard for many years. |
The AFL-CIO Construction Trades Council of New York recently issued a release to set the record straight on the benefits of union carpenters. Thousands of men and women from all walks of life are able to have strong middle class careers with good wages and benefits thanks to the union. The construction industry is a leader in diversity and transformation for the future.
Non-union workers are often exploited on job sites, underpaid, often put in perilous situations and treated unfairly. The missive goes on to ask what non union contractors are doing to create any real opportunities in construction that offer good wages and benefits, safety training and education.
Since 2015 over 1,684 New York City residents were placed in union apprenticeship programs creating good middle class careers and advancement. 65% of the new local apprentices are minority applicants who will hone their new trade into successful careers.
In addition, over 550 veterans have been placed in the construction industry across the five boroughs in the last two years thanks to the program Helmets to Hardhats.
