The hot topic of the day with drone users and non drone users is the registration of drones by the FAA. How likely is it that the FAA will be able to get all drones registered? Is it necessary to register all drones? Everyone in the drone world, and some not in the drone world, are talking about the government registration of drones. The government wants all drones registered whether they are basically just toys or used for package delivery or used for aerial photography. But, the question has been asked, how will the government ever be able to find all the drones. Some drones are made by putting together separate individual parts. Will the government require all parts used to make a drone be registered. This could be very complicated as some parts used to make drones are also used for other technology. Does it go against what this country stands for to make it mandatory to register all drones? I know there are drones that are very small and have a very limited fly time. These are basically toys that small children will be using. It would make more sense to me if the government made registration necessary for a specific type or size of drone than to just include all drones. There is a huge difference in a drone that will fly for 7 minutes and a drone that can fly all the way across the country and back. Let's talk about the home made drones. There are thousands of people across this country who simply order parts and put their own drones together. "Do it yourself" has always been acceptable here in the United States of America. That is part of what makes this country the best country in the world! Do it yourself gardening, construction, remodeling, horse training, mechanics, photography…the list is endless. Why should do it yourself drone making be any different? If the rule was made for a certain size drone to need to be registered, fine. When buying a certain size controller or battery, maybe then it would need to be registered. I don't see the government having the ability even then to keep track of home made drones. There are just too many scenarios for that to feasible. On the other hand, a very wise suggestion would be to designate airspace just for drones. Would there still be people who violate the rules? Yes. As long as there are people in the world, there will be imperfect people in the world because we are all imperfect and there are always some who have to push the envelope and others who simply don't take the time to check out the rules to start with. With this in mind, we have to remember that bad people will do bad things that are against the law whether there are laws in place against that bad thing or not. In other words, if someone wants to do harm to another person or place, they will do it without getting permission. If a persons goal is to fly a drone in a place or way to hurt someone or something else, they will. It would be wise of the government to invest in some preventative measures such as a gun that will take control of and land a drone that is in the wrong place or believed to have intent to harm. Likewise any business that feels threatened by drones could do the same. In summary, no, I don't believe it will be possible for the FAA to register all drones and I don't believe it is necessary to register all drones, only the ones that might pose a threat to the manned aircraft. In the meantime, we intend to enjoy our drones in a safe and lawful way. We will stay 5 miles away from airports while flying and not fly above 400 feet.
