Glass Filter Media One easy and affordable way to improve your water quality is to replace the sand in your sand filter with recycled glass media. This glass media is processed to have uniform, smooth particles ideally suited for fine filtration. You will know it is time to change the sand when the pressure gauge on your filter drops less than 8-10 psi after backwashing. Instead of using sand, ask for glass media. The initial cost of glass media is somewhat higher, but will save you money in the long run. Here are the advantages of using glass media: It’s better for the environment. The glass is recycled. You can backwash less often and for less time than with sand, saving energy and water. Because it filters more finely, you may be able to cut down on the time you run your pump. Changing the media less often saves energy of manufacture and transport. Glass media filters more finely than sand. It removes particles down to 5 microns compared to 25 microns for sand. (A human hair is 70 microns) You will notice the improvement especially at night around the lights. If you have a DE filter now that is ready for replacement, consider a sand filter with glass media. DE filters work only slightly better and cost more to operate since the DE powder has to be recharged after every backwash. Energy Efficient Pumps and Motors You can save money and energy with a more efficient pump or motor. Depending on the size of your plumbing, we recommend either a Pentair Intelliflo® variable flow pump or a two speed pump (or motor) with the appropriate time clock. Pentair’s Intelliflo® pumps are very quiet and save energy. They require 2” or greater plumbing to work correctly. If your plumbing is 1 ½”, then a two speed pump or motor is best. If your pump is in good shape, then a two-speed motor will work. A two-speed pump or motor requires a time clock or controller designed for two speeds. The speed can also be changed manually at the pump. Why two speeds? There are times, such as at night or winter, when you might need some circulation but not as much as you do during the day. You can save quite a bit of energy when operating at lower speeds. Freeze Guard An essential electrical component that protects your equipment is a freeze guard. A freeze guard turns on your pump, by-passing the time clock or off switch, when the temperature falls below freezing. This helps avoid damage to your pool and spa plumbing and equipment.
