Things To Consider When Shopping For Baking Stones

Cooking,Consumer,Food & Beverages
Choosing the right pizza stone is not a walk in the park. There are several factors that you need to take into account to ensure that you get exactly what you are looking for. For example, you should be aware that pizza stones are manufactured using various materials like ceramic, stone, hard clay, marble, tile, and fire brick. Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. They also come in different sizes, shapes, and thickness. Generally speaking, what you should be looking for is one that adapts easily to heat and one that's durable enough to withstand repeated usage.

Which Is Better: Glazed Or Unglazed Pizza Stones?

Most of us who love eating pizza prefer a crisper crust. With that said, if you want a crispy crust, you should definitely choose an unglazed baking stone. Why? Because these are more effective in absorbing moisture while providing even heat. The more moisture the stone absorbs, the crispier the pizza becomes. The main drawback in using an unglazed stone is that it's more difficult to clean compared to a glazed stone. But if you prefer pizza that has more soggy and less crisp crust, then you should get a glazed stone. In short, what you choose depends on your personal preference.

Choosing The Right Stone

First of all, you have to make sure that the stone you're going to buy will fit into your oven. As was mentioned earlier, pizza stones come in various shapes and sizes so finding the right size shouldn't be that hard. If you are purchasing the stone online, make sure that you got the size measurement right. You also need to consider the thickness of the stone. Again, this is a matter of preference. It will take longer to cook pizza on a thicker stone but the pizza will come out better because of the more efficient distribution of heat. This is referred to as uniform baking. And of course, a thicker stone would be less susceptible to damage.

Characteristics Of A Good Baking Stone

The first attribute you should be looking for is efficiency in retaining and distributing heat. The stone should be able to hold the heat well and keep the oven temperature steady. This is to avoid overcooked or under-cooked pizzas. The stone should also be able to absorb moisture to get the right crispiness in the crust. For this reason alone, you should go for an unglazed stone. It may be harder to clean but that's a small price to pay to get a well-cooked pizza.

Where To Buy Pizza Stones

You have two options - you can either buy the items online or try finding them in a store near you. There are several brick and mortar stores that sell pizza stones like Williams Sonoma and Bed Bath and Beyond. If there's a branch of these stores nearby, just go to the kitchen department and you'll find them. It's even easier to find the items if you are going to buy them online. You can try Amazon or the e-commerce websites maintained by the two stores that were just mentioned.
