The Cells that give color to our skin, hair and eyes are called Melanocytes. These cells make the pigments and the mentioned body parts gain their color. If Melanocytes stop making pigments or they die, the skin color may become totally and outstandingly white.
This extraordinarily whitening of the skin causes vitiligo. The logical reason behind the death of Melanocytes is still unknown. The treatment for vitiligo can be done through very basic preventive measures.
Who is prone to vitiligo?
• The skin disease affects men and women equally.
• It does not cause on the body of any special individual.
• All are equally prone to vitiligo.
What causes it?
Vitiligo is the result of reduction in the levels of melanin. It may get transferred to children from their parents though it is no rule. The sufferers of vitiligo do not have immunity related disease. If observed closely you may see that the vitiligo patients are purely normal, have no health issues and their parents were normal too.
The disease causes patches on the skin on a healthy human body and gets camouflaged if the skin is fair in complexion.
Does it spread?
No one can surely tell whether vitiligo may spread over the body or no, though it does spread eventually. For some it may happen fast and on some bodies it may be slow. All body parts are equally affected with the disease.
Vitiligo is dermal disease. In this, the skin loses its original color and pigments. This leads to patches on the skin which is white in color. Though it is not something serious yet it can affect the children and the adults. It has been noted that around 8% of Indians do have vitiligo. The reasons for this disease are:-
• Reduction in the levels of melanin
• Melanin is not processed by the body
Treatment for vitiligo is not something major to be concerned about. Mild preventive measures may affect a lot.
Protection of skin against the sun
The areas where the patches are formed have to be protected against the sun rays. The reasons are:-
• The white patch formed is prone to sunburn
• Sunburns will only worsen the situation
• A fair complexion may camouflage vitiligo
Usage of sunscreen
The use of sunscreen will benefit your skin in the following ways:-
• Protection against the Ultraviolet rays
• Skin will become water resistant
• Best is to apply is before 15 minutes of leaving the house
• Apply it on intervals of two hours
Other preventive measures to avoid increase and causing of vitiligo
The other ways of protecting your own self from vitiligo are:-
• Wear clothes that cover the body well
• Do not stand in the sun for long, look for a shade
• Avoid getting a tattoo on your body
Through very simple ways you may avoid the signs of vitiligo and protect yourself.
