Museums in the Washington, D.C. Area

Art and Culture

There are many museums in the capitol city of the United States. Each museum is unique and has a lot to offer in the ways of history, nature, science, art, and discovery. There is definitely a museum in DC for every age, budget, and interest. Some of the best museums to visit in the area have beautiful and remarkable displays and exhibits that rotate on a regular basis, so you can always expect to see something new. It’s an incredible experience to walk through these places and see the different presentations and the varying topics addressed. Listed below are descriptions of just a few of the museums you might consider visiting.

The Arts Barn

This former horse stable has been made over to be a wonderful venue for local artists to create and sell their work. Photography, paintings, sculptures, and other visual art methods are available to see and buy here. All the art is original and done by either the resident artists or by well-known artists from around the region. The facility also offers arts classes and workshops for all ages. In addition, there are some spring and summer camp programs available for children. This site is a very family-friendly place.

The Smithsonian

This institution is probably the largest and most well known in the area. There are actually 20 museums affiliated with the research facility. The museums are free and open every day of the year except for December 25. Just a few of the ones you can visit within the Smithsonian group are the Natural History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, the Ripley Center, the Portrait Gallery, the American History Museum, the African American History and Culture Museum, and the Smithsonian Castle. With so many choices, you will be able to plan a full schedule for your trip to the area.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Admittance to this museum is free. Tickets are given to see the main exhibit on a time slot basis so that your experience will not be crowded with too many other visitors at the same time. If you are in the military or police force, you can get special timing consideration with your tickets. This museum presents the experiences of victims and survivors of the holocaust during the Second World War. The purpose of these displays and presentations is to instill remembrance and reverence for that dark time with the hope that as the circumstances and facts are learned, this particular history will not be repeated.

The International Spy Museum

A really fun and unique experience in the area will include a visit to the Spy Museum. This place offers spy day camps where you can get into the action of being a real spy with briefings and secret tasks to accomplish. There is even a spy shop where you can purchase tools and gear that will help you with your own secret missions at home. The facility also aims to teach about the history of spying around the world, and how it has influenced various international events. It is the only dedicated spy museum in the United States. A tour here will be a memorable experience for all.

Overall, there are myriad places to see and visit in the capitol city. There is a museum in DC nearly everywhere you turn, and nearly all are free of charge. All you have to do is plan a day or two, or even ten, to visit the area and see all the wonderful displays that are open for public enjoyment and education. You won’t believe how much there is to experience.
