Getting There: From Geneva to Méribel

Travel & Tourism
All through the winter and well into the spring, skiers flock to the French ski resort of Méribel, keen to experience its alpine charm and world-class slopes against the backdrop of the Vanoise National Park. The relatively remoteness of Méribel is part of the resort’s charm, though its mountainside location can make transportation arrangements complicated for hopeful skiers. Fortunately, visitors to Méribel have a number of transport options from which to choose.

Airport Options

Méribel does have its own altiport (a small, mountaintop airport), but because it caters only to those arriving by private plane or helicopter, most skiers are likely arriving in a more conventional manner.

As a European travel hub serving over 15 million people each year, Geneva Airport attracts many winter sports fans intending to make Méribel their final destination. Nonstop flights from London to Geneva are offered daily by a number of airlines, with flight times typically running about 90 minutes. Once you’ve landed at the airport, there are a number of ways to get from Geneva to Méribel.

Airport Transfer

In terms of convenience, a pre-booked airport transfer is the most straightforward way to get from Geneva to Méribel. Most reputable airport transfer services will take bookings over the phone or online, so you can set up reliable transportation with little fuss. For many people, the assurance of knowing transport is already arranged is a huge relief!

Airport transfers can range from exclusive private vehicles to shuttle buses for the more budget-minded. But no matter what type of transfer you book, there’s plenty of room for any and all ski kit you’re taking along.

A transfer from Geneva to Méribel typically takes about two hours – plenty of time to plan out which of the resort’s slopes you’ll visit first!

Car Hire

Geneva Airport sits on the border of France and Switzerland, and is therefore divided into French and Swiss halves. Both halves have their own car hire desks, with companies such as Hertz, Thrifty, and Europcar available. If you hire a car on the French side, you’re probably better off avoiding Swiss motorways on the way to Méribel and taking only French roads – a route that will take longer, but avoids heavy tolls.

The shortest road from Geneva to Méribel is approximately 112 miles, or about 135 if you take only French roads. Along the way, you may want to stop and take in some of the charming towns of the Alps, such as the towns of Annecy or Albertville, the site of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games.

Public Transportation

Geneva Airport is well set up to accommodate the many skiers that use it as a way station on the journey to Swiss and French ski resorts. In the winter months, the Altibus serves Geneva Airport, offering low-priced transport from Geneva to Méribel, in addition to dozens of other ski resorts in the area. Group rates are available – just another reason to bring your friends!

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you need a transfer from Geneva to Meribel, Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you get to and from the airport swiftly and safely with your ski luggage and ski equipment.
