The Three Valleys ski domain in the French Alps is the largest in the world and comprises a number of individual locations, such as the La Tania ski resort. The skiing is superb but as always, the skiing fraternity is constantly looking for new thrills and challenges. They’ve come up now with another: the “Three Valleys Escapade”. Doing the Impossible The Three Valleys is such a huge area and comprises so many slopes that any idea of skiing across all three valleys on one day would seem absurd. Yet that’s exactly what some determined skiers have discovered is possible! Do It For the Bragging Rights The basic idea is simple. You follow a planned route of lifts and skiing routes so as to be able to say at the end of the day that you’ve skied across this vast integrated resort. Why bother? This goes back to a sense of achievement and, to some extent, the urge to pit yourself against nature. Very few people would try this and it is almost as much of a test of your endurance as skiing ability. It’s a real ‘feather in your cap’ and something to boast about in the après-ski discussions! What it Entails There is a published map available at the Croisette 1850, which shows links between lifts and pistes, starting at the La Tania ski resort and moving on from there – ending back in La Tania. You can find printable versions online with detailed step-by-step guides. A Considerable Challenge Be clear before you start though that this is something like “Around the World in 80 Days”. You’ll need to be very precise about timings, connections and sequences. If you temporarily get lost, stop for a nice leisurely lunch or for a chat with others, then you won’t get through it in one day. It is demanding because if it wasn’t – everyone would do it! As it asks a lot of your skiing, discipline, organisation skills and endurance, once you complete it you get your photo into the local “Hall of Fame” and you’ll become a minor legend throughout the La Tania ski resort! NB You’ll need to get an early start and eat on the go. A packed lunch and drinks will be required. Don’t forget that you’ll be working hard, so take plenty of water with you for hydration. Know your limitations too. If you start to feel really tired and jaded then swallow your pride and stop. This isn’t a route for Supermen and -women only, but don’t take it on if you’re unfit or not totally mobile. Finally, don’t take chances or cut corners due to being ‘carried away’ trying to complete this Three Valleys Escapade challenge.
