During this period, “candidates are grouped into four firm-sized categories. Those with the highest point totals from each category are selected.” This allows individual and small firms to compete against other small firms, to allow for a fairer and more balanced rating system. The candidates that do not get selected during this phase may qualify to be chosen in the Super Lawyers Rising Star Award category. While up to 5-percent of candidates in any given state may be chosen for the Super Lawyer Award, only about 2.5-percent of attorneys evaluated for the Rising Star Award are selected.
