7 Common Foot Ailments

Health

Dry, scaly skin could just be caused by dry winter weather. However, it could also be an indication of a deeper problem. This is just the type of condition that should be examined carefully by a foot doctor in Sturgis. These medical professionals are experts when it comes to feet. Here are just a few of the most common ailments they treat:

  1. Bunions. These large bumps can be found at the base of the big toe. They are caused by a misalignment of a joint. Often times, they are tender and painful, especially when wearing shoes. While they are considered hereditary, they can also be caused by arthritis, trauma or over-use, and congenital deformities. However, they can be easily treated. Depending on an exam and x-ray evaluation, your podiatrist may recommend taping, orthotics, or surgery in order to correct this painful condition.
  2. Corns. Also known as calluses, these hard bumps are build ups of skin. They usually form on pressure points on your feet or around bony areas. Often times they are on the bottom of the foot. They are usually caused by friction and pressure repeatedly occurring. Shoes, running, and other physical activity can aggravate the issue. They can be trimmed or padded as needed. In some severe cases; surgery can be done to remove them.
  3. Plantar Fasciitis. This painful condition occurs in women more than men. It consists of the connective tissue running from the heel to the ball of the foot becoming inflamed. It causes severe pain in the bottom of the foot and even causes the arch to feel tender. It can occur due to obesity, trauma, or over-stretching. To ease the pain and cure the condition, taping, medication, orthotics, and injections might be recommended.
  4. Neuroma. Usually occurring due to a pinched nerve or nerve tumor, neuroma is extremely painful. Normally, these tumors are benign growths that can be found between the third and forth toes. It can cause burning, itching, tingling, and numbness. While it can be passed on genetically, high heeled and improper fitting shoes can also cause it. After an x-ray, a podiatrist may administer cortisone shots or perform surgery if needed in order to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
  5. Nail Fungus. This fungal infection doesn’t affect just the nail. It can cause problems all through the body. It manifests itself through nail thickening and discoloration. It can also be painful. Most of the time, medications can be administered to help clear up this chronic condition. From oral medications to topical creams, there are many different regimens that your podiatrist might recommend.
  6. Fallen Arches. This condition occurs when the arch of the foot lowers and falls to the ground. While it can cause pain in the foot, it can also cause back severe back pain and issues in the ankle, hip, and knees. It is normally caused by arthritis or musculoskeletal disorders, or it can be genetic. Wearing shoes that support your arches can definitely help. If needed, your podiatrist might also recommend a surgical procedure to help reconstruct your foot’s arch.
  7. Athlete’s Foot. This itchy, scaly rash often occurs between the toes and the bottom of the foot. It can cause the skin to become thick, discolored and painful. It gets its name from its frequent occurrence among athletes. This is because it is a fungus that grows in warm, damp areas. Shoes, dressing rooms, and showers can all become breeding grounds for this fungus. Wearing shoes and socks is a great way to prevent it from occurring. However, your podiatrist will most likely also recommend an anti-fungal medication.

If you have foot pain and are debating whether or not to call a foot doctor in Sturgis, it’s best to make an appointment just to be safe. Foot pain can often be an indication of a deeper problem that could impact the rest of your health. Don’t put your feet at risk. Call a podiatrist and get back on your feet.
