For this week's random anime of the week, we are going to do something a little different! Instead of choosing an anime to review, we are going to talk about what makes a good anime great. We've all seen them, those anime series that touch our hearts. The series who's characters turn from graphics on a screen to legends in our hearts. There are some bad ones too, boy are there some bad ones. But, have you ever stopped and thought, what makes it so bad? Well we are going to talk about it, and give some examples. Actually, we are just going to focus on two major topics: Story and Character development. These two topics are the most important things in my book. They rely on each other, need each other, and if they work well together, we get an amazing anime series. We all watch anime for one reason: a good story. We want to get lost in the fantasy land of animated characters and indulge ourselves into this world. To do that we have to have a good story, which may seem simple, but it's not. What makes a good story? Well it has to be interesting, of course! But interesting can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. When does a story go from in depth to filler, such as with Naruto? What is that fine line between getting the viewer an in depth back story, and just wasting time. Well, I'm a fan of a good back story. However, I like the story to keep moving forward. A perfect example of this is Gurren Lagann. The objective is simple, right? Kill the evil guy. We get a good few episodes out of this, after they kill the bad guy you think, well it's over. NOPE! They throw a twist down your throat and the story gets even deeper, I love it. Take Fate Stay Night, for example, this is the perfect anime to see just how in depth an anime can get. It's pretty deep. Some anime series such as Full Metal Panic just feel hollow due to their loose story. The character is just doing the same thing over and over again and the viewer gets bored. The second part of a great anime is character development. As a viewer we want to be able to see our characters grow from the environment around them. If the character is growing, we get a sense of time passing by, which in turn helps us stay indulged in the fantasy world. If the show has been going on for a hundred episodes and the character hasn't changed one bit, we start to wonder. It's hard to get really into an anime when the characters don't progress, that's part of the reason I didn't enjoy Full Metal Panic that much. No matter how many lessons were taught, no one learned! Some great examples of progression would be Log Horizon. From the beginning to the end you can clearly see the development of each individual character, it's a thing of beauty. Then we get the wild cards like Neon Genesis Evangelion, to which the characters do some heavy progressing, then relapse hardcore enough to get you all sorts of confused. What makes a good anime? Honestly it's up to the person. A terrific anime to one person may be an awful anime to another. However, these two points are essential in any story, not just anime. A good story is bound by its plot and character development, this is how that story becomes more than just that, a story. I would love to hear any opinions that people have, I am sure there are plenty!
