You’ve made the decision to undergo laser hair removal in New York. Follow these tips to prepare for your first session. A Month Prior - Tanning should be avoided for at least a month prior. The laser needs to penetrate deep into the skin’s surface to reach the hair follicle. As the laser is drawn to melanin, darker skin will require a higher intensity for the laser. The skin’s pigment that bronzes lies near the skin’s surface, so using a higher intensity laser could potentially burn or blister the skin. Otherwise, at the regular intensity, the laser may not reach deep into the follicle, proving the treatment ineffective. Therefore, it’s optimal to have your skin tone as close to its natural hue as possible so that the correct laser and intensity can be selected.
- No waxing, tweezing, or depilatories of the hair to be removed. In order for the treatments to be successful, the hair needs to be in the follicle. However, you can shave during this time, as the hair is only removed at the skin’s surface, leaving the root in place.
- No bleaching of the unwanted hair. Laser hair removal works best on dark hair, so avoid any lightening of the hair to ensure a successful treatment.
The Day Prior - Shave prior to the appointment. If you don’t shave, a tech will likely do it for you. If you are not shaved, the laser will target the hair above the skin’s surface which could cause the skin to burn.
- Have clean skin free of make-up, perfume, lotions, and deodorant. Any substance on the skin can interfere with the laser’s effectiveness and could increase the chance of skin burning or irritation.
- Avoid taking aspirin. If you are concerned about discomfort from the procedure, use ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as aspirin is a blood thinner that could cause abnormal bleeding during the treatment.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is one of the easiest ways to promote a quick recovery.
