Travel Competitions: A Free Giveaway?

Travel & Tourism
Where do you want to go - Tahiti, Hawaii or Peru? It may seem too good to be true, but winning a holiday competition and spending a week or two in an exotic location with your partner is a reality for people every year and an excellent way to see the world. In case you have doubts about the legitimacy of travel contests, you should know that most giveaways are genuine and the prizes real.

It might help to realise that a travel competition benefits the company sponsoring the contest as much as it does the winner. Big company marketing departments have the hefty budgets to include free giveaways as part of their annual plans, with the goal of increasing brand awareness and ultimately increasing revenue through the acquisition of new customers. Here are some of the ways a corporation will use a holiday competition to build their business.

Purchase for Entry

Creating a travel giveaway that requires a purchase to qualify is one way organizations directly increase their sales. Allowing multiple entries for additional purchases only adds to the amount of product sold, as contestants know their chances of winning will increase with each additional entry and therefore, purchase. This exchange of product for a contest entry converts potential customers into paying customers immediately - the end goal for many companies. Email Lists

Corporations spend a lot of money and effort building valuable email lists of customers. Offering a trip through a holiday competition is a smart way organizations can gather the personal information needed to expand their lists and increase their contacts for future email communications.

Companies know they are competing against hundreds of other brands for your cash, so if they can establish a relationship through regular communication, and occasionally send a promotion right to your inbox, they may have a better chance of gaining you as a customer. Email lists are gold to big brands!

Word of Mouth Marketing

By offering a free trip, businesses realise that word of mouth marketing is going to work to their advantage - big time! They know the winner is going to spread the news of winning to all of their friends, family, and these days, all over social media. This kind of positive publicity can spread like wildfire and help a company promote a positive image to the public. Corporations hope the curiosity of a winner’s contacts will lead them to the company website or social media accounts to check out the organization that held the holiday competition.

Increased Engagement

Some travel contests require a person to “Like” or “Follow” a brand on one or more of their social media accounts as part of the entry process. It’s another way companies look to increase their audience and build a rapport with potential future customers.

Now that you know why companies will hold a holiday competition and how they benefit from the process, you should be confident in knowing that contests are real, as well as the prizes. So next time you come across a travel giveaway that looks too good to be true, take a chance and enter. Someone has to win - it might as well be you!
