As a homeowner your first line of defense is to know when someone comes onto your property via your driveway or some other point of entry. A driveway alarm is a convenient means of advanced warning when a visitor, the mail carrier, a delivery vehicle, or an intruder starts towards your house. Not only are these alarms some of the least expensive available, they are one of the most useful security systems on the market today. How Do Driveway Alarm Systems Work? Functioning on the same basic principles, there are three types of operation for driveway alert systems from which to choose. No secret codes, locks, or system calls to a security company are needed for these to be effective. Rather, the basic alarm operation relies on a sensor you can install yourself close to your driveway. The receiver is installed inside your home. When something triggers that sensor, it sends a signal to its receiver, causing it to sound as alarm. You can choose the type of programming for your alarm by the particular alarm model you buy to install. The vast majority of these systems are wireless. The sensor placed outdoors by the driveway runs on batteries. Your indoor receiver works on batteries as well, or may be plugged into an electrical outlet. Some systems are even solar powered, which are effective as long as your driveway is not shaded for the majority of the day. The effective range of each available system varies. Some are best suited for shorter driveways while others are excellent alarms for long distance driveways. These can manage quite long ranges but the bottom line is that the more obstacles (walls, trees, and such) the signal must pass through to signal its receiver, the shorter its effective range will be. What Happens When the Alarm Trips? A wireless driveway alarm system operates either by means of passive infrared sensors (PIR) or magnetic ones. A third type, reflective beam sensors, is also available. PIR systems detect movement by searching for big changes in heat (infrared energy) in its pathway, whether it be from an animal or a person. A magnetic alarm uses its electromagnetic sensor to detect large metallic objects that pass over it. The sensor is buried in the ground on the driveway and is connected to a transmitter above ground. When a vehicle passes over it, an alarm is triggered. These make the best long range alarms and are completely undetectable by intruders. Reflective beams are not advertised as driveway alarms per se, but may be used as such. You can select the type of driveway alarm system you prefer for your needs. You also choose the tone and volume of your alert or alarm. There may be from two to around 30 choices depending on the program you install. Some even feature voice message programming. If you install multiple sensors around your property, you may also program them so that you know from its sound which part of the property has been breached when someone or something enters the property. The process of choosing the best driveway alarm for your particular needs is simple. Consider your location and access points, and where you want to place sensors. Then browse the top brands in the field to assure you purchase a top quality system.
