Public schools are faced with a myriad of challenges. From a lack of funds for needed books and supplies, to classrooms with too many students and too few teachers, school districts across the U.S. are forced to do more with less, leaving gaps that go unaddressed in many cases, especially for those in lower income areas. The need for volunteers willing to work with children and families is constant, not only in the education volunteer programs in Rockford, but in other areas as well. Non-profit organizations work with the community to address areas of reading and literacy, serving the mentally ill, disabled senior citizens, and other under-served community members. Shrinking budgets for non-profit and human service agencies prevent all who need assistance from being served. Waiting lists are longer, and crisis situations become more prevalent. Many area residents donate their time to help address social needs. They assist fellow community members who need an extra hand, a few hours of their time, and a kind word. They are volunteers. Making a Difference Volunteers fill gaps in critical service areas, from delivering food to homebound seniors, to tax preparation, to answering phones at domestic violence hotlines, to serving as volunteer firefighters. Volunteers mentor, help children with homework, tutor students, and provide support for those going through a tragedy or emotional crisis. Who They Are Volunteers come from all backgrounds, cultural experiences, and ages. They are individuals, partner organizations, and area businesses who volunteer their time to make their communities a better place for all who live there. There are teachers and college students, business owners and retail workers, public service workers and health professionals all volunteering their time to help their community. There are volunteer opportunities everywhere, including education volunteer programs in Rockford and the surrounding area.
