There’s nothing like a good travel book to transport you to a faraway place and get you dreaming about your own travels. Whether it’s a fictional story, historical account, travel memoir or even a cookbook or guidebook, a book set in a foreign destination provides insight into a place’s culture, food, history, geography, or way of life from the author’s perspective. Some of my favourite books have been travel stories set in places like Venice, Spain, Croatia or Peru, and each book I’ve read has made we want to catch the next flight out to visit the very place I was reading about! You might be planning to spend your holidays in Croatia this year, or perhaps you have never considered Croatia as a destination before. In either case, there are some amazing books out there which aim to get you familiarised with the country and give you some ideas on what to see and do. I must warn you, though: you may end up falling in love with this beautiful coastal city from the get-go, and if you’ve never before dreamed of visiting Croatia, you surely will change your mind. Cookbook Get into the mood for your holidays in Croatia ahead of time by browsing through Dalmation Cooking: Cuisine of the Slavic Mediterranean - the first and only cookbook of its kind in English. Written by culinary professional John J. Goddard, this cookbook features more than 300 authentic recipes and lots of information on the history of Croatia’s Mediterranean cooking tradition. History For a look into the dramatic history of Croatia, pick up a copy of the classic Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History written by Robert D. Kaplan. Beginning at the assassination that triggered the First World War to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia, this book covers the complicated history of the country and will leave you with a better understanding of Croatian culture.
