Hard drive shedding is when your old hard drive is when your old hard drives are physically destroyed so any data that might be on them cannot be recovered after the part is disposed of properly. On hard drives the data that is electronically stored there contains confidential information. It is also covered by the FACTA (the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions and the HIPPA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) Act that covers the proper disposal rules. The big question is what way would be the best way to destroy this information correctly. • Software erasure—on the market today there many software programs that “claim” they are in compliance with the Department of Defense’s disposal rules. There are some of these software programs that you have to pay for and some that you can download for free. Both types work on the same principle of overwriting the hard drive several tunes with bad data, The National Association of Information Destruction (NAID) at this time does not recognize software tools for destroying data as an adequate means of doing so. The software that is sold to get rid of data on the hard drive does not come with a warranty that guarantees all of this information is gone using a hard drive shredding software program. One of the biggest problems using this type of software is the time that it takes to run the program. For example, to erase a forty gig hard drive it could take two to three hours or longer. • Physical shredding or data destruction—with method of hard drive shredding the hard drive is physically destroyed. The data is not completely destroyed if you just smash it with a hammer or put a drill through it. All it does is make the hard drive no longer usable. Unfortunately anyone with forensics ability would still be able to recover most of the data that was on the hard drive. The only way that you can make sure that the data cannot be reconstructed is to shred the hard drive into little pieces. For this to occur there are many companies that will do hard drive shredding for a fraction of what it costs to purchase software erasure tools. • Degaussing—this is the process of sticking a magnet that is very strong next to your hard drive so it will no longer hold any data. This method of hard drive shredding will eliminate all the time it would take to erase the drive with erasure software. The tool that is used to perform this process is cost prohibitive for your average office.
