An Insider's Guide for Hungry (and Thirsty!) Skiers in Chamonix

Travel & Tourism
After a day of skiing some of Europe’s best Alpine inclines, you and your mates are going to want to fill up and refuel on some good, hearty food before heading out for a bit of après ski fun. We’ve put together a list of recommended mountain restaurants and bars to choose from, so you can be sure you get to experience the best of Chamonix. Best Mountain Restaurants

La Tanière

La Tanière Mountain Restaurant is a small, family-run Argentinean steak house located below the side of the Plan du Croz piste. Cosy seating is set around a roaring fire on cold winter days. In addition to tender beef steaks and BBQ, choose from a selection of South American wines to pair with your meal. This place is so good, reservations are encouraged.

Alpage de Balme

Head over to Alpage de Balme in Le Tour, near the bottom of the Aiguillette drag-lift for made-to-order, quality Swiss cuisine, including variations of rösti. This place is small but features a large terrace and fills up quickly, so it’s best to reserve ahead of time.

Arrêt Bougnète

For warm and filling food at value prices, try some local Savoyard cheese-based favourites and galettes (savory pancakes) at the Arrêt Bougnète in Vallorcine. The restaurant is located at the bottom of a piste, with a lift back up the mountain.

Plan Joran

If you’re looking to splurge a little on high-end fare, visit the pricey Restaurant Plan Joran in Argentière, located mid-mountain, about a 600m walk from the Tabé chairlift station. With fabulous views, specialties include roasted duck, snail and reblochon cheese casserole, paella risotto, veal with chanterelle mushrooms, as well as classic Savoyarde dishes.

La Bergerie de Planpraz

For another option in haute cuisine, take the telecabine up to La Bergerie de Planpraz Restaurant, located at the Brévent mid-station where the Planpraz gondola arrives. With panoramic views of Mont Blanc from the large wooden deck, choose from delicious flame-grilled steaks, croûte bergerie, rack of lamb, tarte aux myrtilles or a beautifully-strong local cheeseboard. Reservations are definitely recommended.

Après Ski Fun

Monkey Bar

After a busy day of skiing, relax at Monkey Bar with a happy hour drink in hand as you enjoy the featured live music. This casual, laid back bar located in Chamonix Sud is a perfect way to start your night out with friends.

Chambr Neuf

Head over to the terrace at Chambr Neuf for beers or two-for-one cocktails before 10pm. This casual bar is located on Av Michel Croz.

Bar Club Chavanne

Grab a drink and join the crowd on the outside terrace at Bar Club Chavanne, while listening to a mix of Latino and lounge music one night, and rock classics or club music the next. Located at Telesiege De La Chavanne, this bar has a unique atmosphere reminiscent of St. Tropez.

O’Byrne

If a friendly pub is more your scene, O’Byrne is located in the centre of town at 36 Rue du Lyret and is perfect for a chilled night out with friends. Order some beers and fine Irish malt whiskeys and enjoy the jazz and blues tunes playing in the background.

Cantina Club Cantina Club, just off Rue Joseph Vallot, gets hopping when the other bars close up at 1:30am. The partrons are mostly French and friendly and the music continues pumping throughout the night.

Getting There

Travel to Chamonix is easy, with a choice of direct flights from London into Geneva taking about an hour and a half. Your best option for getting to your chalet in Chamonix from Geneva Airport is to arrange a private shuttle transfer ahead of time. Through Shuttle Direct, you and your mates can reserve a vehicle and driver to transport your group and equipment to your accommodations in just one hour. Book the return as well and feel satisfied knowing your ride has been taken care of and paid for in advance.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you need an airport transfer to Chamonix from Geneva and back again, Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your luggage get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.
