Family Summer Holiday Activities in Val d'Isere

Travel & Tourism
The perfect place for family vacations, Val d’Isere, has a lot going on in the summer. Although primarily thought of as an Alpine ski destination, the summer months provide a host of fun activities for adults and kids of all ages. Here are some things to do during your next family summer holiday in the French Alps.

Hiking

Take your group for a hike through the mountainous terrain set out before you and choose a route suitable for your brood. There are a number of trails, of varying degrees of difficulty, available to hike. Take along a camera to capture the stunning mountain views and wildlife sightings you are sure to experience along the way.

Paintball

Your kids are going to love an afternoon of paintball during your family summer holiday! Armed with a paintball gun, two groups compete for a scarf located in the middle of the course. The goal is to grab the scarf without being hit by a paint ball from the other team.

Parks

Pack a picnic lunch and get back to nature at Vanoise National Park. Initially created to protect the Alpine ibex (a species of wild goat), the park still serves to protect various flora and fauna native to the region. Take in the striking views of the Vanoise massif and the beautiful lakes, as you spend the day relaxing or doing some mountain walking. Don’t be surprised if you spot some wildlife during your visit, as the park is also home to chamois, marmots and more than 100 species of birds.

Farm Visit

As part of your family summer holiday, take your kids to the Ferm d l’Adroit in the Manchet Valley to witness a working dairy farm. Children love visiting the animals and the whole family will enjoy watching cheese being made on site. Don’t forget to purchase some to take with you!

Geocaching

Your kids will no doubt be on board with this fun activity you can all participate in together. The idea is to search for little treasures using the GPS system on your mobile device. Once you’ve located one (sites are located all over the world) you will open a waterproof bag or container, remove the treasure, write your name in a log book and leave a small gift of your own for the next treasure hunter.

Via Ferrata

Originally invented by Italian soldiers who learned to scale the Dolomites, the popular sport today involves scaling mountainous rocks while being secured by a rope. It is popular with the younger ones as it provides the thrill of mountain climbing with the added security little kids often require. During your family summer holiday, you and your group will follow marked routes through the mountains. Climbers are helped along by steps, bridges and ladders, while being attached to a rope for extra safety. A number of adventure companies in the area offer the Via Ferrata experience for anyone over the age of 8.

Scenic Drives

If your family summer holiday includes grandparents, or you are looking for something more on the relaxing side to do, you may want to take a scenic drive and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the French countryside. Drive along the back roads for a quieter and very picturesque view of the Tarentaise Valley. There are strategic look-out points and other points of interest along the way.

Belinda Smythson works for Ski Amis, a specialist ski travel agency and booking service that has been helping avid skiers and outdoor enthusiasts craft their perfect winter or family summer holiday for over a quarter of a century.
