4 Outdoor Materials that Are Not Sun-Friendly

Business

The sun in the San Fernando Valley is strong and the heat takes a toll, but this life-giving essence is also the number 1 draw to this area. Why live somewhere cold and rainy when you can live where the sun shines all year?

Of course, living in such a sunny environment full of poolside parties and outdoor shopping requires some lifestyle adjustments. For example, wearing sunscreen is a must. Tinting all car and home windows is also a necessity. Most importantly, you need to invest in sun-safe building materials for your home from trusted outlets like Duramax in San Fernando.

Below are 4 outdoor materials that can fade or otherwise deteriorate in the California sun, as well as some suggested alternatives.

Fabric Awnings

Though awnings are built to shade you and your porch from the sun, these products are still vulnerable to sunlight. The dyes, in particular, will drastically fade over a short period. In addition, the sun can dry out the awnings, making them prone to tearing.

Instead, consider installing a solid covering for your porches, windows, and patios, such as vinyl pergolas. They are incapable of tearing and are built to withstand sun exposure.

Outdoor Furnishings

Many low- and high-end furniture outlets offer "outdoor" furniture, such as cushioned chaises and patio sofas. Do not believe everything you read from these stores, though. While these furnishings may be less vulnerable to dust and moisture than indoor furniture, the sun can dramatically fade and warp these furnishings, especially cushions, pillows, and other fabrics. Most of them are only built for shady outdoor areas.

If you want to furnish the outdoors, install patio covers to keep your decor shaded or at least minimize the amount of direct sunlight they receive. Also, remember that white cannot fade. White building materials and decor are always an excellent choice. They are also fashionably minimalistic and clean in appearance.

Plastics

Certain building materials are plastic-based. This includes decorative trim, storage sheds, balustrades, and more. Some fences, exercise equipment, and furniture can also be plastic-based. Over time, the sun can penetrate the protective layers of plastic, which makes the material weak, discolored, rough-textured, and potentially even porous. Strong UV rays will penetrate and break down the molecular structure of most plastics, unless they are specifically engineered to withstand this destructive process.

Shop for UV-resistant materials for your home, such as specially developed vinyl.

Wood

Large surfaces on your property like siding and decks need special care; they take up so much visual space, after all. Consider siding—the protective layer outside your home—and your deck. For the most part, wooden decks and siding are extremely vulnerable to direct sunlight. Despite several layers of sealant and weather-resistant chemicals, wood can buckle, warp, fade, and even crack after several months of intense sun exposure.

Though sun-resistant linings and caulk exist to protect these areas, your best financial bet is to invest in products that are sun-safe from the get-go. Wood is rarely the answer; UV-resistant vinyl is a safe alternative.

So if you are concerned about how sun-safe your home and yard are, consider upgrading to UV-resistant products, like vinyl fencing, decks, sheds, patio covers, and more. There are many outlets, including Duramax in San Fernando, that can help you outfit your home with sun-safe products so that you can worry about what is more important—keeping yourself safe in the fun and uplifting California sunlight.
