While winter brings holiday cheer and frosty mornings, it also brings an increase in cold and flu germs. Children are especially susceptible to these types of illnesses. Because many of these sicknesses are transmitted through surfaces, your kids can easily come home from school, daycare, or a friend’s home with the bacteria in tow. To decrease your children’s chances of ending up in the bilingual urgent care clinic, here are a few things that you can do. - Encourage hand washing. The frequent washing of hands is the easiest way to prevent the spread of the cold and flu. Your children should continue to wash their hands before eating and after using the restroom. During cold and flu season, encourage them to wash their hands after playing, reading books, or if it’s been longer than 2 hours since their last wash. This decreases the chances of germs making them sick.
- Eat healthy foods. During the winter, you and your family are less likely to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. The vitamins and nutrients found in these healthy foods help to boost your immune system and keep sickness at bay. To keep your children healthy, encourage them to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Green smoothies, veggies and dip, and apples with peanut butter are just a few of the delicious ways you can decrease the chance of sickness.
- Choose a good multivitamin. If your child’s immune system is healthy, they will have a harder time getting sick. To boost their immunity, ensure that they are taking a multivitamin daily. Whether your child prefers a gummy or a chewable, children’s vitamins come in a variety of different flavors. Find out what your children like and get into the habit of consuming one each day.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Without proper sleep, the body doesn’t have the power or energy to ward off sickness. In fact, your body does most of its healing and repairing while it’s sleeping. Because of this, it’s extremely important that your children get a good night’s rest. Put them to bed early and limit the amount of screen time before bedtime.
- Simplify the schedule. A stressed mind and body is more susceptible to illness. It impairs your immune system. Be protective of your child’s schedule. Don’t allow them to overbook or overexert themselves. If you notice that your child has too much on their plate, help them to take some time to relax. Their health depends on it.
This winter, do what you can to keep your children healthy and happy. If you notice severe symptoms coming on, visit the bilingual urgent care center in your area as soon as possible.
