Culture in Chamonix: the 5 Most Interesting Museums

Travel & Tourism
Discovering new places is one of the great joys of life, so when you travel from Geneva to Chamonix, remember to explore the Alps’ beautiful natural heritage and vast agricultural history. With a variety of museums to choose from, you can spend your afternoons soaking in the local culture.

Crystal Museum

Journey through the Alps’ colourful mineralogical history with this extraordinary crystal exhibition. The museum showcases over 500 crystals, including the local smoky quartz and red fluorites.

Go to Espace Tairraz, 615 allée du Recteur Payot, 74400 Chamonix and explore the hidden treasures of the Mont-Blanc. Open daily from 2-6pm, or from 10am-1pm and 2-6pm during French holidays; entrance is just 4.50€ for seniors.

Musée Montagnard

Discover Chamonix’s rich heritage and explore the history of Les Houches. Based in a Baroque Church built in 1750, this museum recreates the authentic agro-pastoral building techniques used until the 1950s. With a collection of furniture, utensils and equipment, you can experience the traditional rural Haute-Savoie life for just 4€.

Visit rue de l’Eglise, Les Houches (74310) Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2-6pm.

Alpine Museum

Expand your local knowledge further and return to eighteenth-century Chamonix to witness its development from an Alpine backwater to today’s popular skiing resort. Situated in the old ‘Chamonix Palace’ at 89 avenue Michel Croz, this beautiful museum holds an impressive collection of photographs, paintings, artefacts and maps.

Open every day except Tuesday from 2-6pm, or 10am-12pm and 2-6pm during the school holidays; admire the valley’s historical changes for just 4.50€.

Maison de l’Alpage

Looking for even more local colour? Why not explore the time-honoured pastoral culture of Alpine life? The Maison analyses mountain pastures, allowing you to discover the secrets of an eco-sustainable system through various exhibitions, including ancient shepherding and farming practices, local produce, and changes in landscapes across the years.

Located in Le Bouchet, Servoz (74310), it is open from Monday to Saturday 9am-12pm and 2-6pm– and entrance is free!

Mario Colonel Gallery

When you travel from Geneva to Chamonix, you’ll witness some of the mountain range’s most amazing views. To revisit these spectacular sights, explore French photographer Mario Colonel’s best work, as he captures the Mont Blanc’s essence in a collection of portraits.

Based in 19 Rue Whymper at the heart of Chamonix (74400); tourists are welcome seven days a week from 10am-12pm, and 3-7:30pm.
