OK, so you’ve packed all of your hand luggage, had your goodbye party with your neighbours and organised us to come and help you to move all of your stuff to the Algarve. But is there something you’ve forgotten? Before you leave England and become an expatriate, there are a few things you must bear in mind and sort out to avoid unnecessary charges and paperwork further down the line. Contact HMRC Inform HMRC that you are moving away – otherwise, you could incur tax charges from which you, as an expatriate, should be exempt. You should also make clear to your local council that you won’t be living in the UK anymore. HMRC will require you to fill out a P85 form to make it official. Whether you plan on staying in Portugal or are simply moving your furnishings to the Algarve to take further into Europe, you should research the local tax rules of that country. Some rules apply specifically to expatriates and your new local authorities probably won’t take too kindly to claims of ignorance. Get your pet microchipped As is the case with many other European countries, there are certain rules about bringing pets into Portugal. You must make sure that your pets have been vaccinated at least 21 days before you plan to travel, and you are also required to carry evidence of the vaccination. You will also need to have a microchip fitted to the pet to make it easier to track if it were to run away. Don’t worry, the process won’t cause any harm to your furry friend or put them in any pain, plus it will help you to track them down if they ever do disappear. Acquire a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) The EHIC is an invaluable tool to have once you start living abroad, as it makes you eligible for healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. Without proper insurance or an EHIC, you could rack up a massive medical bill. On the topic of healthcare, you should inform your current dentist or GP that you’re moving away, too. This will save them from organising appointments under the impression that you’re still here, thereby freeing up more schedule time for other people to have appointments. Above all, just relax Living in an unfamiliar country can be daunting at first, but over time, we know that you’ll learn to love everything the Algarve has to offer.
