Jain Weddings are characterized by simplicity and purity with a number of traditions that take place through a number of days. In this culture, the union of a man and woman into marriage happens with loads of zeal and enthusiasm. Simplicity and Purity are two major reasons that have made this religion gain a number of followers. With a Jain wedding, there are many sacred traditions associated that complete the Jain Wedding rituals. Today, there are number of ways you can find your partner in the Jain community. Discussing a few rituals below: Pre-Wedding Rituals Jain celebrations begin with the association of two people in this sacred relation. Before the wedding, there are some rituals that take place. Some of the pre-wedding rituals are: • Lagana Lekhan: A small puja that takes place at brides place. In this ritual, the priest decides the date and time for the wedding to take place. • Lagana Patrika Vachan: After the groom has performed Vinayakyantra Puja, the priest is supposed to read out a letter having details of the wedding at the grooms place. • Sagai: The sagai ceremony is an official welcome of the groom into the bride’s family. The brother of the bride in this ceremony applies tikka on the forehead of the groom and greets him with gifts. • Arti and Baarati: A puja called the Mada Mandap is help at both the bride and groom’s place and then the baarat is welcomed at the venue with an aarti thaali. Here, the bride’s brother and groom apply tikka on each other’s forehead. The groom is then greeted with gifts and married women recite mangal geet. Wedding Rituals Once, the pre-wedding rituals are completed, the wedding rituals begin. The wedding rituals in a Jain wedding include: • Mangal Pheras: One of the most important ritual, the Mangal Pheras in a Jain Matrimony signify purity of the association of two souls. In this ritual, bride and groom take pheras around the sacred fire followed by Kanyadan that is performed by Bride’s father. He places his daughter’s hand with a rupee and 25 paisa (sawa rupaya). Mangal geet are performed by ladies of the house during the entire ritual. • Granthi Bandhan: The ritual begins by a married woman tying the bride’s saree to groom’s shawl. After completing the seven pheras around the fire, the bride is now Vamangi meaning better half of her husband. Later, they then exchange flower garlands. Post-Wedding Rituals After the wedding rituals are completed, the audience present congratulate the newly wedded couple. There are some post wedding rituals that take place. • Aashirvada: The ritual where the couple seeks blessings from elders present at the venue. The ritual is called Aashirvada. • Sva Graha Aagamana: After every ceremony comes to an end, the bride and groom arrive the groom’s house. The bride here is given a warm welcome. • Jina Grahe Dhan Arpana: The entire family offers prayers at the Jain temple to seek blessings for a fruitful beginning of the couple. Reception The family of the groom celebrates the union of two souls, hosts a reception where the guests offer the newly wedded couple with gifts. The reception usually happens after a day or two of the wedding when the couple and family have rested. Jain Weddings might be simple but the zeal and enthusiasm remains at peak throughout the process. The relatives and friends have a great time experiencing different rituals.
