Logistics and fleet operators looking to minimise their emissions while also helping to protect the environment are sure to take an interest in the launch of renewable bio-methane fuel as a lower-carbon and more cost-effective alternative to diesel for heavy goods operators. An independently verified and approved fuel The fuel is already in use by the likes of John Lewis, Argos and Waitrose and has been independently verified as renewable and sustainable and approved under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme by the Department for Transport (DfT). Renewable bio-methane is derived from food waste and distributed through gas pipelines to CNG Fuels-owned and operated refuelling stations for compression into fuel. The energy source is said to emit 70% less CO2 than diesel, while also being 35-40% cheaper. “Compelling business case to switch from diesel” Justin Laney, general manager central transport at John Lewis Partnership, commented: “We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and playing our part in tackling climate change. Renewable bio-methane gives us the opportunity to make our fleet cleaner and quieter and, with significant cost savings, there is a compelling business case to switch from diesel”. CNG Fuels CEO Philip Field added: “Renewable and sustainably sourced bio-methane is the most cost-effective and lowest-carbon alternative to diesel for HGVs and is attracting increasing interest. We are expanding our refuelling infrastructure nationwide to help fleet operators save money, cut carbon and clear up our air. “We are proud to be the first company in the UK to offer its customers RTFO approved bio-methane, and pleased to be able to do so at the same price as fossil fuel gas.” The firm is targeting its new fuel offering at high-mileage HGV operators, as it claims it is these that will enjoy the greatest financial and carbon savings.
