Pure Imagination: Delicious Bookish Treats

Food & Beverages
As confectionery wholesalers, it’s only natural that we have a passion for the products we sell. This love of chocolate and sweet treats was inspired for many of us by the imaginative and whimsical descriptions of confectionery in our favourite children’s books. From Willy Wonka’s meal-in-a-stick-of-gum, to Harry Potter’s secret trips to Honeyduke’s, talented authors have been moving us (and making our mouths water) for decades.

Here I share three of our favourite inventions from children’s literature and offer some suggestions of grown-up treats which evoke these weird, wacky and delicious creations for your shop.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Willy Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight

Safe to say, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not the book to read when you’re on a diet! It you’ve ever been tempted to lick the wallpaper in your grandma’s house or dreamt of swimming in a river of chocolate, you’ll understand the incredible imaginative power of Dahl’s pen.

To capture some of the whimsical nature of Wonka, why not stock the Choccy Scoffy Curious Truffles by the artisan truffle maker Monty Bojangles? There are no lucky golden tickets to be had, but with fun names and vibrant packaging this brand will bring a dash of the ridiculous (and delicious) to your retail space.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Turkish Delight

“Each piece was sweet and light to the very centre and Edmund had never tasted anything more delicious”. Unfortunately for him, Edmund’s devouring of the White Queen’s addictive Turkish Delight ‘tied with a green silk ribbon’ signalled the beginning of a dark and dangerous path. However, Lewis’ descriptions of the jelly sent thousands of children to their parents begging for a taste. Despite this, as confectionery wholesalers, we’ve noticed that the delicately flavoured, aromatic treat largely remains a grown-up indulgence.

Koska’s Turkish Delight, dusted with Narnian magic, is ever so slightly addictive itself. The beautiful packaging from this historical brand will look fabulous in a themed display.

Harry Potter: Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans

“They mean every flavour!” an enthusiastic Ron tells a nervous Harry Potter during Harry’s first ever journey on the Hogwarts Express. ‘Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans’ are a favourite for many in the Wizarding World including Hogwarts’ headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. “Alas, earwax!”, he sighs after tasting a pleasant-looking lemon-coloured sweet. Other flavours include spinach, liver, and even bogey!

J. K. Rowling’s endless inventiveness, that continues to captivate the nation’s children, was responsible for some of the wackiest edible creations ever recorded on paper. Unfortunately for us muggles, enchanted chocolate frogs are unlikely to be making an appearance at your favourite confectionery wholesalers anytime soon. Instead we recommend Amarelli’s liquorice. These brightly-coloured sweets are covered in candy and have a surprise heart of high-quality Italian liquorice. Even better, we can guarantee that there is no earwax flavour!

Don’t lose time in providing your customers with some honeyed nostalgia. Ask our friendly sales team for help in emulating these enchanting treats in your retail space.

Remember, you don’t have to be a wizard to hit the sweet spot – as confectionery wholesalers, we think the real deal is pretty magical too!

Angelina Moufftard works for hf Chocolates, established confectionery wholesalers with decades of experience supplying sweets and high-end chocolates to retailers across the UK. Working with the most dedicated suppliers from France, Spain, Germany, Holland, Belgium, the USA and the UK, hf Chocolates' great tasting and beautifully packaged products add panache to any sweet display.
