When thinking about a dynamic person one thinks of one with a positive mental attitude and driven to accomplish their goals. When it comes to dynamic learning, one may be dynamic if goals are set and one has the mental attitude to get things done. This is, however, easier said than done. Today I wish to discuss these two aspects of studying, setting goals and developing the positive mental attitude to perform. Setting Goals Setting goals for studying should be an easy task. But for most people this is not the case. Goals must have two factors to prove effective. First, a goal must be challenging yet not so challenging so that it frustrates. Second, a goal must be measurable. It is often more than simply did you get it done or not. The quality of work is also at stake. Challenging To set a short term goal for a study session, you must understand the assignment and have a vision of completion. Let's say you have ten math problems for homework. You think it might take five minutes each to complete the work. That would mean that your assignment might take 50 minutes. Your short term goal might then be to complete the assignment in 50 minutes with 100% correct solutions. Remember your estimate of time. One of the sub-goals in this case would be to see just how well you estimated time to complete the work. Say it took you an hour to finish. You underestimated the time. But if you finished in 40 Minutes you underestimated. Do this often enough and you'll get quite good at making estimates of time. Once you get good at the time estimation, you can set goals to go faster than your estimate. While this may seem a frivolous goal, it really is not. By knowing timing, you'll be better able to judge how much time you'll need to allot to studying. Measurable Goals Setting goals is one thing. It is important but setting the goal is only part of the picture. You need to be able to measure the results of your goals. This is a question of quality, not quantity. Time is a quantity. If, however, you do everything you are assigned but do it wrong, the quality of the work is not good. Quality is as important as quantity. They go together hand in glove. By setting a measurable dimension to your goals you assure that the work you do will count for something. If the purpose of study is to learn then getting the correct answers is important. If you don't then your time was wasted and your brain has a hard time releasing the wrong answers from its memory. Some Final Words As you work to put yourself in a position of dynamic learning, your responsibility is to create a condition of maximum performance. To do this you must set goals that can be met and where the work is of high quality. This requires a positive mental attitude. If your goals are so lofty that they cannot be met, then you are wasting your time and falling victim to frustration. If your goals are not measurable, then you really have no standard of quality and any old work will do. The power is in your hands. If you are serious about changing your study habits, then begin with measurable goals that are within the realm of the possible. _______________ Dr. Roger Lewis is the owner of Effective Study Tips where he introduces parents and their children to the most effective study habits we know of.
