Detoxing for weight loss is something that is worth thinking about. Now, let me make it clear at the beginning, I am not talking about preparing for a colonoscopy. I am not talking about harsh laxatives or high colonics either. What I am talking about is a scientific approach to detoxing for weight loss. Ridding your body of the two main toxins that stand in the way of weight loss, refined sugar and refined flour. Detoxing for Weight Loss: Some Basic Data The average American consumes about 150 pounds each of refined sugars and refined flours. The main problem with flour carbohydrates is they turn into sugar in the bloodstream. Other carbs do as well but as with any sensible eating plan, some carbs are always welcome. Low carb, not NO carb is the phrase I like to think about. But the sad truth is that, aside from sugars directly, most carbs come directly from refined flour in bread, cakes, pies, and cookies. The goal of a detox program at the beginning of a dietary plan is to remove ALL refined sugars and refined flour from the diet. This is not necessarily easy. Sugar is one of the most addictive 'drugs' on the market. Much like the tobacco companies adding nicotine to cigarettes to make them more addictive than they already are, the food giants use chemistry to manipulate foods so you'll constantly come back for more. What the food companies are after has been called the 'Bliss Point,' the very point that doesn't allow for conscious control over eating. Look at the label of all processed food in the supermarket. You'll find sugar as an ingredient in the vast majority of foods. You find it in foods in which you'd never add sugar in your own kitchen. Sugar and refined flour are associated with many diseases and discomforts. Anything from sleeplessness to heart disease is commonly placed on the list of problems caused by sugar and flour. Detoxing for Weight Loss: The Basic Plan During the first ten days of engaging in a weight loss program, stop consuming refined sugar and refined flour. To get through the times when you are tempted to just have that one piece of candy, stop and drink some water. You'll not only be sure of proper hydration, you'll be fighting off the temptation. At the end of ten days, you are likely freed of dependence on sugar and flour. If you can't live without bread, okay, just use gluten-free substitutes instead. No, they don't taste the same but many are really quite good. Your goal is not to detox forever. Rather it is to rid yourself of the dependence on refined sugars and refined flour. For the most part, using gluten-free substitutes are generally fine when you find the ones you like. I saved the good news for the end. If you have a sweet tooth, that's fine. Just eat fruits or use honey as a sweetener. I am hesitant to use any chemically created substitutes like stevia or aspartame. But honey or other unprocessed fructose is fine. Just don't go overboard. One final thought, if you are already on a weight loss program and you have not yet done a science based detox, no worries. Do it now. in the final analysis, this is one of the things that may make weight loss permanent. ------------------------- Sara Dawson is the managing partner at The Science of Permanent Weight Loss.
