I am writing this in January 2018, right after 20% or so of Americans have resolved to lose weight. It happens every year that people make the resolution and fail in follow through. The truth is that of the 20% who make this resolution, less than 10% actually follow through. That is 10% of the 20% not half of the 20% of resolvers. My question is, why do so many people have such a low rate of success? "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves," Caesar tells Brutus in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. How very true, although Shakespeare had no idea that dieting is made so difficult because of toxins in our bodies and the environment. Toxins set up roadblocks to successful weight loss. Even when you do everything 'right,' eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, there is no guarantee you'll lose weight. Don't blame your stars. Don't blame your psychological makeup. Place the blame where it belongs, on toxin impact on your health and weight. Toxin impact is widespread. Toxins are a major cause of fat cell production and the growth of those cells. What is happening is that fat cells store toxins when they cannot be properly flushed from your body. In a healthy body, toxins are flushed through urination, defection and sweating. When your kidneys cannot flush toxins from the bloodstream, when your guts have only 'bad' bacteria, toxins cannot be expelled. If you don't allow your skin to sweat, toxins do not leave your body through the skin. What is the Toxin Impact on Health? So you buy only organic fruits and vegetables and meat sustainably raised in order to not introduce toxins into your body. So sorry, but this is an action that only limits rather than eliminates toxins. We simply cannot escape the toxin impact on health. Toxins are present in the atmosphere, the water we drink, and much of the food that we eat, even when we are scrupulous about the foods we choose. If you eat any processed food at all, the likelihood that toxic chemicals are introduced in the food as preservatives or for color or even texture. Toxins cannot be avoided. They are ubiquitous. A 1987 study looking at fat cells in American subjects contained dioxin and several industrial chemicals. Toxins contribute to inflammation which, in turn, have a significant impact on those suffering from osteoarthritis. Also, toxins impact metabolism. Fat cells are important to metabolism in that they are burnt as energy when there are no other sources for energy. But, as new fat cells are produced they are altered by toxins so that they no longer contribute to the metabolic process. Increased fat cells have an impact on diseases like type II diabetes and place your thyroid at risk. In combination, these serve to keep fat cells growing rather than being lost through diet. The Answer to the Impact of Toxins The answer is detoxing. While detoxing will not prevent the introduction of new toxins, by removing toxins you stay one step ahead of the problem. Detoxing is not a single event, rather it is ongoing. It is sustainable because to detox regularly you need not give up foods you love. There are simple ways to detox. Drinking some teas regularly is one. There are also some rather unpleasant ways of detoxing. I opt for the simple, tasty ways to detox. By detoxing regularly, you remove the vast majority of toxins from your system and allow your body to flush those newly entering from your body. It is a win-win. Not only that, detoxing on a regular basis will cause you to lose weight. Now it is a win-win-win situation. ———————————— Sara Dawson is the managing partner at The Science of Permanent Weight Loss.
