Each method has some qualities and a few limitations. Which one would you use depends on the type of the label, finishing required and cost. Both technologies are equally popular, but one should understand the roles performed by them. Offset printing uses a printing plate to transfer the image to the carrier and then the printed substrate. In Flexo printing, the ink is transferred directly to the printing substrate directly. How are they different? Use of plates Flexo technology uses flexible plates made from a photopolymer compound. They are wrapped around the printing cylinder. The image is made on the plate using a laser imagesetter. The non-image areas are washed away using some solvent. Ink is transferred to the plate using a rotating roller known as anilox. For each color, a separate plate and printing station are required. The plates are quite durable, and they can be used several times without any deterioration in quality. In offset printing, the plate is made of aluminum. The image is transferred to it using a set of rollers. The complete image is then transferred on a blanket and the substrate. Textile label suppliers use offset or Flexo technology depending on the requirement and number of labels to be printed. Use of Ink Four process colors yellow, black, magenta and cyan, are used in offset printing. There are dedicated printing stations for the process colors, and other colors are made on the spot by using different combinations. UV curable or water colors are used in offset printing. In Flexo printing, along with the process colors additional print stations are used for spot colors as well. The spot colors are pre-mixed, or they are created on the spot. UV inks are not only high in running speeds, but they need not be emptied or drained when not in use. Water-based colors should be removed when not in use.
