Many haulage companies today are well aware of the importance of implementing environmentally sound practices across their business. From increasing recycling in the office to using sustainably sourced products, most haulage companies have policies in place to ensure that they are doing their bit for the planet. One of the main areas for improvement, as we all know, is fuel efficiency. Many fleet operators invest in new technology and innovative operational methods to make sure that fleets are getting the most out of their fuel. With all of this effort, tackling your fleet’s environmental impact can sometimes seem all ‘stick’ and no ‘carrot’. However, a new award launched by the Freight Transport Association aims to celebrate haulage companies that make environmental concerns a priority. The New Award The new award, launched recently by the Freight Transport Association, is part of the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme and is sponsored by tyre manufacturer Bridgestone. This ‘Leadership in Carbon Reduction’ award is aimed at commercial fleet operators who work tirelessly to tackle climate change by increasing the efficiency of their fleet. The award celebrates best practice and helps others in the industry learn how members of the LCRS successfully take on the challenge of lowering carbon emissions. A spokesperson for Bridgestone North Region said, “The LCRS Awards is an important event in highlighting the good work that takes place and an event that we are proud to put our name alongside”. The proud winner of last year’s award, Howdens Joinery, said that the prize was a reflection of their hard work and “ongoing commitment…to improve fuel efficiency, whilst reducing carbon emissions”. What is the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme? Formed in 2009, the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme now has over 130 members across the country. It is managed by the Freight Transport Association with the aim of showing the Government that the logistics industry is forward-thinking and ahead of the curve when it comes to the environmental impact of haulage. Their aim is to prevent the government from implementing increased regulation or extra tax for haulage companies by demonstrating the ways in which the industry is working to reduce carbon emissions.
