While the most that many people see of Málaga is a view out of the window of one of the taxis from Málaga Airport on their way to a Costa del Sol resort, there is actually plenty in the city worth stopping for – particularly for families. In fact, there are so many child-friendly activities, free spaces for families to enjoy, and a wide range of restaurants with kids’ menus that it makes an ideal family holiday destination. Here are just some of the excellent child-friendly activities you can enjoy in the Costa del Sol’s beautiful capital. Splash Around on the Beach Of course, you don’t come to the Costa del Sol and not want to enjoy the wonderful weather, beautiful golden sand beaches and warm, inviting Mediterranean. But there’s no need to worry, because Málaga has a number of excellent beaches offering great facilities for young families. If your children like the water they might even want to try out some of the tamer water sports on offer (while you show them how it’s done on a trip on a giant inflatable or jet ski). Fun in the Sun at Parque de la Alameda Many children will – eventually – tire of the beach so it’s good to know that in Málaga there is plenty more to entertain them. One of the best (and cheapest) things for families to do in the city is to visit the city’s park. Set right in the centre of town, this extensive park has a number of playgrounds, lots of open space for the kids to play, and lots of shaded areas. It also makes the perfect spot for a family picnic. Step Back in Time at Gibralfaro Castle Set high above the city, the fourteenth-century Castillo Gibralfaro with its history of Moors and pirates will not fail to capture the imagination of your little ones. While they imagine sword fights and sea battles, you can enjoy the stunning view of the city from its beautiful hillside location. Ride High on the Ferris Wheel Take to the skies above the city’s port with a fifteen-minute ride on its 70m Ferris wheel. The cabins are air-conditioned so this is a great way of getting kids out of the midday heat, and they’ll love the views out across the sea and the city. Take a Dip at the Water Park Just down the coast from the city is the Costa del Sol’s largest water park, Aqualand Torremolinos. With different zones for very young and older children, your little ones will love splashing around in the lazy river and riding the winding water slides. Getting There Getting to Málaga couldn’t be easier (or cheaper) as most of the major budget airlines fly here from across the UK. Watch out though, it can be annoying if you save on the flight and then get ripped off by taxis from Málaga Airport.
