Being a bit of a movie snob can sometimes make me come across as a bit of a jerk to some of my closest friends, but I just think I have a knack for knowing the difference between a good movie and one that should never have been made. I’m also a stickler for certain amenities in the movie theatres near me, and when it comes right down to it, the best movie theatres I frequent serve dinner and beer. I can almost hear how absolutely taken aback you are by that last statement. Trust me, I’ve heard all of the criticisms before: “You’re not at the movies for the cinema. You’re in it for the menu. Lame.” “Seriously? A good theater has to have a full menu and beer to even be on your radar? Wow.” “You’re exactly what’s wrong with consumers these days — they want everything & are aghast when they don’t get it.” Just follow my logic for a bit, though, and while I may not convince you that a good theater has killer food and beer, I’m hoping you might see why such an available option is pretty sweet. I work at least forty hours every week, and sometimes I have to bring my work home with me. Being able to truly get away from my work life is getting harder to do. By being able to just pick a day where all I have to do is choose a movie, a meal, and a beer, then sit down & be treated by a server, I can actually disconnect from the world for just a bit. I don’t have to worry about preparing a meal or anything. That’s a pretty nice change of pace. If I want to treat my special someone to a date night, that might include dinner and a movie. A traditional restaurant would have us spending time getting to the restaurant, a possible wait time before being seated, possible slow service, and even having to deal with a raucous environment. That’s about a couple of hours worth of time. Factor in a couple of hours for a movie, and you start realizing that the quality time you thought you were having with your significant other is actually a little less than stellar. Finally, as a movie buff, I like the idea of a movie pushing boundaries and trying to get the audience to see beyond the traditional ideas of what’s acceptable. As such, the idea of a movie theater providing a full meal and killer beer is radical. Couple it with a revamped movie theater & first-run movies, and you have the makings of an all-around movie experience. Isn’t that what going to the movies used to be all about? Sure, the movie theatres near me might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and coming from someone who can come on a little strong on the movie bit, I know I haven’t been a great advocate either. However, if you like watching good movies in a great setting, and you’re at least a little intrigued about the whole meal & a beer concept, you’d be doing yourself a favor in checking it out. Who knows? It might become your ‘thing’. The best of all the movie theatres near me in Des Moines, IA is Flix Brewhouse.
