Let’s be perfectly clear from the start: the idea of watching any cult films while on a date with someone seems absolutely batty. Sorry, but it just doesn’t seem like the right way to either start a possible relationship or to strengthen it. Cult films are the oddballs of cinema, and they just don’t seem to fit in anywhere. Some were box-office poison while others were successful films critics hated. Others had no audience while some found niche audiences. Even crazier is that no one movie genre is safe from having its own cult representative. So, why would someone decide that introducing this element into the realm of a date would be a good idea? Aren’t you trying to keep your special someone from knowing you’re a weirdo until later? But what if your date is a little weird, too? I mean, opposites are said to attract, but part of the reason we tend to be drawn to someone in the first place is because we have things in common. Why can’t kitschy, nonsensical, and in some cases just plain terrible movies be what you have in common? Stranger things have happened, and romance is often a silly thing that makes no sense at all. Maybe watching a cult film on a date should be a thing after all. If your eccentricity is in line with your special someone’s eccentricity, then here are five cult films that you might find to be perfect for date night: Somewhere in Time — How far would you go to find the love of your life who also happens to be a picture of someone taken nearly a century ago? This is one of the sweetest, yet saddest, movies ever. Dirty Dancing — Everyone has seen this movie, and if you haven’t, what’s the deal, yo? Nothing is better than a movie set in the 60s deciding that a full choreographed dance sequence to a song from the 80s is perfectly acceptable. Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann version) — We all know the story, but you’ve never seen something so visually stimulating as this version of one of literature’s great romances. Y Tu Mamá También — Sometimes the love that dare not speak its name chooses not to for a reason. Coupled with a road-trip, teenage hormones, devastating heartbreak, misconceptions about sex, and a revelation you didn’t see coming, this movie is astounding. Harold and Maude — A young man in his 20s is obsessed with death, attends funerals, and stages suicides. He meets a woman in her 70s that also attends funerals but has a very unique take on life & living it to its fullest. You’ll actually learn more about what a love story is than you ever thought. Cult films are those little bits of cinema that are hard to really understand. They were either ahead of their time, full of genius, or just couldn’t find the right audience to get its message across. They are also, at least sometimes, just terrible movies that should never have been made, at least in the estimation of the public. Then, again, isn’t this how relationship are seen & judged by society? Given the wide range of criticism and cynicism that surround love, a cult film may be the perfect way to express to someone the ultimate sentiment — let’s be different together.
