Get Out and About in Gaudí's Barcelona

Travel & Tourism,Art and Culture,Advice
Barcelona is a buzzing metropolis with a unique flair; it is bursting with stunning architecture. Forget dilapidated, grey churches and ancient palaces, this joyous city has been graced with the striking work of architect Antoni Gaudí. Admired worldwide for his undeniable talent, Gaudí takes inspiration from nature in his design and the result can be seen painted across the city in his swirling stones, distorted iron and vibrant mosaic. Grab your camera and get out and about with Gaudí, following in his footsteps as you enter another dimension of technicolour and seemingly impossible structure.

Only a two-hour flight out of London and a brief Barcelona airport transfer journey away, this is an extraordinary city that should be at the top of every travellers’ bucket list.

Picnic at Park Güell

Take a breath of fresh air during your day at Park Güell, becoming at one with nature and art simultaneously. Allow yourself to take time wandering among Gaudí’s uniquely designed buildings; notice the lack of straight lines in the entire park, reflecting his natural, organic inspiration! During your visit to the park, explore Gaudí’s best kept secret - the Colonia Güell. The unusual oval church and crypt was built using techniques that were the basis for the construction techniques employed erecting La Sagrada Familia.

Enter the Life of Gaudí at Casa Museu Gaudí

The Gaudí House Museum is a brilliant addition to Park Güell and is certainly worth a visit. It was refurbished and opened to the public in 1963 following Gaudí’s tragic death and offers a special look into the life of the man beyond his architecture. Admire his self-designed furniture and other fascinating objects linked to his life.

Stroll Around the City

Take your own personal tour of Gaudí’s creations which are scattered across the city leaving rich colour around every corner. His first important building, the Casa Vicens boasts stunning oriental influences, and Le Pedrera has been proclaimed one of the most imaginative houses in the history of architecture. Its stunningly bizarre masses of undulating stone and forged iron balconies reflects the unpredictable essence of the natural world. Stop by the Palau Güell, another picturesque site which contains a ceiling that gives the illusion of a planetarium under daylight. Finally, to complete any Gaudí tour it is essential to visit La Sagrada Familia. Remember every crumbling old church you’ve seen before? Let those preconceptions melt away as you are hit with a kaleidoscope of colour upon entering this glorious work of art. A beautiful place to take a peaceful moment, you can also take in a unique view of Barcelona by climbing one of the church’s towers.

How to Get There

The simplest way to jump start your adventure is a swift flight to Barcelona with Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways or several other airlines, which leave London daily heading to Barcelona. Airport transfers are a quick and easy way to get to your accommodation, so kick off your trip to Barcelona by pre-booking an affordable shared shuttle to transport you from the airport directly to your temporary home so you can drop off your bags and get going! Use your shared Barcelona airport transfer as an opportunity to meet fellow travellers and acquire a new exploring buddy or glean hot insider tips on hidden gems within the city.
