Oftentimes, you run into online reviews, vlogs, blogs, op-ed pieces, and all other sorts of direct messages telling you what you should be doing at any given point. So, no matter if you go back to the first version in 1937 or the last version in 1976, you take away something. But why make this new version of the movie, known more for its tragic, zero-sum story of fame, a date night movie? Here are a few reasons: It’s Stripped Down & Raw — The songs, the settings, and the way the main characters are shaped are done in such a way that there is no sheen on the outside. What you see is what you get. Voices seem haunting, physicality feels intense, and emotions don’t feel manufactured. Storytelling From the Inside Out — Critics will often argue that previous versions of this movie suffer from a lack of likable, accessible characters. As the audience, you’re watching a film about the pitfalls of fame & fortune, but you never see the characters as anything other than representations of rich, famous people with which you cant’ connect. The new version makes you feel as though you know every person on screen. Considering one of these actors is Lady Gaga, finding her accessible as a struggling songwriter is quite a feat. Romantic — Romance is usually made out to be something sappy and sugary sweet. While this might win over the tween crowds, real folks know that romance often has some serious lows. Love isn’t nice, and it can often be the source of complete misery. While each movie provides its own sense of tragedy, the new version really hits you in the gut. A date night movie can be a tough call to make simply because you don’t want to oversell the romance if it’s your first date, and you also don’t want to send mixed messages with a heavier, sadder film. In the end, you both should pick the movie you both think you’ll enjoy the most. Even if it’s a dud, you can grab a drink later & have a great time tearing it to pieces.
