Being a pre-teen can be a real drag because while it’s understood that you are no longer a ‘kid’, you’re still not quite a teenager and therefore need to chill with the attitude and rebelliousness. One other thing that is also tough about being a pre-teen is how people tend to box you in about what you may or may not like, and this includes action movies. |
The biggest issue with pre-teens and action movies is that too many people assume you’re still a child capable of only watching G rated material. Sure, you have a little bookshelf filled with animated movies you quoted endlessly when you were younger, but you’ve matured since then. You’d like to simply let the world know that you are capable of watching content that’s more involved than children’s programming.
If you’re the parent of a pre-teen who’s looking for an action movie that isn’t skimping on the cool factor, here are five that are worth checking out:
The Chronicles of Narnia Franchise — These movies were based on the treasured series of books written by C.S. Lewis. Even with the source material dating back to the mid-20th century, this film franchise really embraced the power and splendor of what the stories were all about. Equal action and fantasy, you can’t go wrong here.
The Harry Potter Franchise — J.K. Rowling’s masterful work was turned into one of the most successful film franchises of all-time. The lines to the theaters were only rivaled by the lines at bookstores. Fantasy, action, adventure, it’s all here. These films are a ‘must’ for any movie buff out there.
The National Treasure Franchise — Combine U.S. History and some intense action, and you’ve got yourself some of the most entertaining movies of the last twenty years. There’s plenty of thrills, a lot of references to the stuff you learned in school, and a lot of great action.
The Indiana Jones Franchise — Speaking of history, throw in some archaeology & you’ve got the start of perhaps the most thrilling film franchise of all-time. It doesn’t get much better than this. The first three films (the classic trilogy) are easily the best, but the more recent fourth installment got pretty solid reviews.
The Star Wars Franchise (original trilogy) — The first three movies in this franchise are easily the most loved and cherished in nearly all of cinema. It’s a timeless story of good versus evil, but how it’s told is truly beautiful. Recent installments to the franchise have earned massive acclaim, but there will always be something special about the first three Star Wars movies.
Action movies tend to have a bit of a reputation for being full of scantily-clad eye candy, boundary-pushing intimate scenes, violence, and explosions galore. Most folks would agree that this content isn’t quite right for a pre-teen kid. Then again, pre-teens have moved beyond the animated features that made up their younger years and are looking for something more substantial in their film consumption. The good thing is that there are plenty of action movies out there that have been deemed suitable for pre-teens, but only you & your kid can have the conversation that makes any film the right choice.
