The Region Despite their small size, the Canary Islands’ location in the eastern Atlantic gives them some pretty striking geographical diversity. As the largest of the bunch, Tenerife boasts this even more than the others. While the south is arid and dusty, the northwest, which is home to the village of Masca, is lush and green. As you get closer to the village, you’ll travel into increasingly rugged landscape. Mountain peaks become visible, rising up over the horizon to provide a stunning backdrop. A small settlement nestled in the Teno Massif, Masca is often considered the single prettiest spot in the Canaries. Activities and Sights Masca’s main attraction is its location. Visitors can take in a jaw-dropping view down Masca Gorge, and the more adventurous among them can traverse the intense three-hour hike down to the ocean. Once there, you’re rewarded with clear waters and a pristine beach – the perfect way to cool off. From there, boat trips onwards or car journeys back to the town are available. How to Get There Due to its popularity, the island boasts two airports; one on the north and one on the south. Both are well-served with regular, affordable flights from the UK, and a journey from London takes only around four hours. You’re best off landing in the north, as it’s closer to Masca, but Tenerife transfers are plentiful, with good operators able to take you to most destinations from either airport.
