Summering in Menorca? Plan a Visit to Cala Galdana

Travel & Tourism
Summer in Menorca is a wonderful time of year. While it’s busier than normal due to its high season, this tiny but very welcoming island seems to effortlessly absorb visitors and still afford an ambience of peace and tranquillity.

One of the many great locations on the island is Cala Galdana. Here a few questions on the resort and the immediately surrounding areas are answered.

What is Cala Galdana?

It is a horseshoe-shaped bay on the island surrounded by pine trees. It has a beautiful sandy beach that some devotees claim is the best on the island.

Is it a vibrant resort?

No resort on the island could probably be described as ‘vibrant’, if that’s taken to mean an electric atmosphere of non-stop partying. This isn’t Ibiza by any stretch of the imagination. It is, however, a resort that is popular with both families and younger people who want plenty to do while based around the ocean and surrounding countryside. The emphasis is one of relaxed enjoyment rather than ‘dancing in the streets’.

Is it very busy in summer?

Like everywhere else in the Mediterranean, summer in Menorca brings lots of visitors, and beaches that are normally quiet can get busy at peak times and dates. However, development in Cala Galdana (and on the island as a whole) has always been carefully controlled, so the number of visitors is proportional to the area’s ability to comfortably cope. You won’t find a vast acreage of hotels here and, therefore, the numbers even during peak season are perfectly manageable and enjoyable by all.

How many big hotels are there?

A few, but much of the accommodation in the resort are private villas or apartments. Generally it has a reputation, as does much of the island, of being a destination for more discerning travellers.

What is the nearest big town?

That would be Ferreries, which is just a few miles (about four and a half) away. However, it is still a relatively small town with picturesque low-rise buildings and, amongst other attractions, a cheese museum. It could not be described as a major town, so the nearest truly larger town is the incredibly historic and beautiful Ciutadella – which is the island's old capital.

How far is Cala Galdana from the airport?

It’s about 22 miles from the airport. Transit times by taxi are about 35-45 minutes, as Menorcan roads are adequate but not super-highways. Note that during the summer, in Menorca, ad-hoc taxis at the airport can be a little unpredictable. Pre-booking or hiring a car might be a good idea.

What’s the swimming like?

The beach is beautiful and the sea is usually crystal clear. It has an EU ‘Blue Flag’ for cleanliness and safety. Of course, the safety of bathing on any given day should be assessed from advice from local experts. Children should always be supervised – as on any beach anywhere in the world.

What are the restaurants like?

They’re plentiful and varied. Some offer modestly-priced international meals such as pizza and pasta for families, while others provide Menorcan cuisine speciality menus and, as you might expect, they will be a little more expensive.

During a summer in Menorca, all the local Cala Galdana restaurants will be open. Outside of June to September, this may become slightly more variable, but finding good places to eat shouldn’t be a challenge at any time.

All in all, Cala Galdana is a wonderful place to spend a week or two.
