Just to start this off on the right foot, it’s important to let you know that you’ll be reading about action movies. Now, some of you might be wondering why exactly it was necessary to put that fact out there. As it turns out, there are a lot of people who cannot stand action movies of any kind. They find them to be sophomoric, asinine, devoid of storylines & nuance, and all together just a waste of film. Strong words, to be sure, but there is some next-level hate going on out there for action movies. But why? Action movies embody what going to the movies is all about — having fun. We go to the movies to forget about our job to get a break from the hassles of life. We want to sit in a comfortable chair, let the lights go down, and suspend the heck out of some disbelief for a few hours. Going to the movie theater shouldn’t always be about high-art, avant-garde presentation. Sure, there are movies that are utter masterpieces. They merit academic study and preservation of the highest order. Then there are movies that show a tornado full of killer sharks causing mayhem and disaster everywhere it goes, and the only people who can stop it are actors who, well, haven’t been top of mind for years. Just an FYI — the latter has six movies in the franchise with an untold number of spin-offs & copycats. Why? Because they are meant to be silly fun! However, let’s talk about the action movies of the 1980s. These movies we special. They were the height of machismo and adrenaline-fueled alpha-male excess. What’a more, the action flicks of the 80s aimed at telling a story, which for some movie aficionados spelled the start of the blockbuster action film. If you’ve never watched an 80s action movie, you’re missing out. Here are five of the best ever made (in no particular order): Over The Top — A man drives big-rigs to finance arm wrestling tournament participation, all while also trying to rebuild a relationship with his estranged son after heartbreak. Raiders of the Lost Ark — The first of the Indiana Jones franchise, and for some, it is the best installment of all. Action from beginning to end. Police Story — This is often thought to be Jackie Chan’s greatest movie. American audiences didn’t get much contact with this legend until the 90s, but this one film is legendary and worth multiple watches. Die Hard — Joking about it being a Christmas movie aside, this is truly one of the greatest action movies ever made. Think of it as a one-act play all within the same building and featuring some of the best stunt work ever. Makes you curious, right? First Blood — Few films dare to cover the topic of military personnel returning from battle or the struggles they have while trying to re-acclimate with a society that’s not keen on including them. This starts the Rambo franchise, but if there’s one to watch, it’s the one that started it all. Maybe it’s time you have action movies more of a chance. After all, it can’t always be fun watching serious movies all the time, right? Why not mix it up with some truly entertaining movies that are all about thrills, chills, and blowing stuff up?
