Global Recession and Dancing Bank Jesters: Some Good News for a Change

Advice,Boating,Finance & Investment
Chins are almost detached with the amount of negative job talk in the world – beginning in the US, picking up fuel in the UAE, and hotfooting across Russia to Japan. It is no mean feat to find economic news with a positive spin on it these days. The US has seen 17 of its banks laid low by the crisis, and overnight some of the oldest and most respected banking juggernaughts of the world’s economy were turned into laughing-stock jersters dancing on a guillotine with silly painted faces. To many experts watching, ashen-faced from the side lines, the problem lies in a loss of faith, and now that cash withdrawals have begun in small individual snowballs, there will be no stopping the avalanche - or the guillotine, if you’ll forgive me. German, Japan and Russia are hurting, and size will offer them no immunity.

But I’ve got some positive talk for you, meaning perhaps you won’t be searching for jobs http://employersjobs.co.uk/ any time soon. Experts predict that the smaller European nations are among those that will come out in the best shape. Just how deeply the recession bites, and how likely you are to lose your job depends on where you are and what you do. For example, Norway – as it was reported in the Timesonline recently, has not gone to the US Federal Reserve for a bailout, and is forecast by the IMF to keep growing economically this year and next. So are Denmark, Finland and Sweden against the tides. The same IMF forecast predicts that the UK will move into recession; and yet, these Nordic nations are well-known to have some of the highest standards of living in the world.

Now I’m not suggesting you move there. And perhaps it’s not just the smaller European nations that will survive the recession without too much depression. Perhaps the down time is going to represent a shift in attitudes that is necessary – not extreme, such as an anti-capitalism revolution or some-such guff – but perhaps its going to open up jobs in different cities, or cause some expatriates to move home.

IOL reported that earlier this month a non-profit organisation called Homecoming Revolution that encourages and helps South Africans around the world to return home, held an expo in the UK. It focused on careers, property and business oppurtunities in South Africa, and more than 45 South African companies attended in a bid to lure some much-needed skills home. "Over 1 000 South Africans attended the event, and they were of an extremely high skills calibre," said Angel Jones, founder of the organisation. So there’s some good job news for you on a Monday; use it, don’t use it. But remember: we made it through a depression in beginning in 1929 and we will again. Just don’t focus on the talk too much – or the dancing jesters.
