Nothing is quite as annoying as a dog that barks all day. It's even worse if it's your dog and you don't know why he keeps doing it. The thing is there is usually a reason but it's not always apparent. Aside from the obvious barking at other dogs or strangers that get to close to your yard there are other reasons that a dog will bark incessantly. One of the big reasons for a barking dog is boredom. A dog with little to do all day and that has little positive interaction with his owner will bark simply to get attention. They also may be hungry or thirsty and their bowl is empty or it's to hot or too cold and there is no shelter from the elements. If this is the case these problems are easy to remedy to stop your barking dog. If boredom is the problem then making sure your dog has toys to play with can help. It is also a good idea to make sure he gets plenty of exercise while you are home which will help him pass those extended periods when you are away sleeping. Paying attention to your four legged friend and playing with him will make him feel more secure and for many dogs that can help mitigate the barking. A lack of proper obedience training can also contribute to dog barking issues. A well trained dog knows what is and is not acceptable and soon comes to realize that barking is no the right way to get attention. Training also strengthens the bond between owner and hound which can also help. Many times your dog may only bark when you are away from the house and only your neighbors are bothered by the noise. In cases like this you may get a visit from one of your neighbors explaining your dog's behavior when you are away. In this case it pays to be friendly and understand that your dog may in fact act differently when you are not around. With this type of barking problem it's hard to discipline your dog because you are not at home. One way of dealing with the problem is to sneak back to your property without your dog realizing it and catching him in the act. You can then reprimand him and hopefully this will stop the barking because he may be unsure of whether you have left for the day or you are still nearby. While this doesn't cover all the ways to stop a barking dog it does give you some ideas as to why your dog is being so vocal and how to deal with it. Just remember that barking is a dogs way of communicating and most dog to so for a reason. It's just figuring out the why that is the hard part.
